It may be colder than ever, with temperatures dipping below the 30s almost everywhere, but Southern Californian residents are once again contending with the sporadic weather that arises during this time of year. The thermometer can rise or fall by 20 degrees in a matter of hours and does so even more often in the winter. Naturally, SoCal’s irregular weather is truly something to tackle when it comes to dressing, and that’s when layering comes into use. I spotted this Fashionista in a fabulous layered look that’s both smart and stylish for the tricky winter climate.
Name: Chanelle Bossert
CollegeFashionista: Where did you get the fantastic pieces of your outfit?
Chanelle Bossert: I’m wearing an Ellison Ellison Ellison army jacket from NASTY GAL, a printed cardigan from Crossroads Trading Co., a Cooperative knit shirt over a Sparkle & Fade dress, thigh high socks from American Apparel, H&M wedges and a satchel from Cooperative.
CF: Describe your personal sense of style.
CB: I would say my personal style is mainly grungy and edgy with a hint of femininity. I really like wearing neutral and dark colors but I also like making it fun by wearing a bright skirt or a printed bustier top.
CF: You have a unique balance of both edgy and girly elements in your personal style. Which store do you shop at to accommodate your style?
CB: I would definitely shop at Urban Outfitters for the rest of my life. They have unique and edgy clothing and accessories, but also have the more feminine styles like peplum tops or floral pants; the store embodies the way I dress!
CF: I love the way you created a pulled together layered look. Can you give some advice on how to achieve a comfortable and stylish outfit in this weather?
CB: My tip for dressing in the Southern Californian weather is to always wear a short sleeved top. In the cold mornings, you can just wear a sweater or jacket over your top to stay warm. That way, when it gets warmer later on, you can take off the outerwear and still be comfortable.
CF: What are your tips for staying stylish on a college student’s budget?
CB: I always like to reuse items but in a different way or with different pieces in my wardrobe. For example, I would wear a casual outfit of an awesome T-shirt with jeans and boots on one day, then dress up the tee by knotting it and pairing it with a high waisted skirt and wedges on another day.
CF: What’s your favorite trend of the moment?
CB: My favorite trend is definitely the the army style. The army green color, combat boots and camouflage print give a cool and grungy look to any style of outfit!
Start with a basic colored top, add a cardigan with a cool geometric print
and top it off with a utility jacket
. On the bottom, wear a high waisted skirt with tights or opt for more warmth with your favorite pair of blue jeans. For added comfort, make sure to bundle up in a thick knit scarf, warm gloves and insulated boots
