I couldn’t be more thrilled that tied button-down shirts made a fashion comeback. From the essential chambray shirt to white linen, tied button-down shirts are ideal for an effortless summer ensemble. For some, this trend conjures faded images of Britney Spears or Carrie Bradshaw. However, the trend has come a long way from the denim filled ’90s. Tied button-down shirts have become more refined over last the spring and summer seasons. Not only are button-down shirts created with pre-cut slits to tie, but they also are tailored to sit at the waist. Aside from looking cute in a tied button-down, this trend also adds definition when the knot is tied at the smallest part of your waist. The days of extra fabric bunching up and not having enough of it to tie at the front are over.
This Fashionista fused her love for preppy pieces and yellow with this tied button-down shirt ensemble. By pairing the shirt with a summer staple like trusty denim cut-offs, the outfit found balance. The little pops of color from the pattern on the shirt also added a flirty quality to the ensemble. The Fashionista topped the ensemble off with a cross-body bag that complemented the overall color palette. Looking for ways to wear a tied button-down? Be sure to read on.

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?
Ceillie Keane: A yellow patterned tied button-down from T.J.Maxx and jean cut-offs from Forever21. This cross-body bag is from Nine West and is my go-to for the summer. The flip-flops are from American Eagle, bangles from Alex and Ani and rings from my family.
CF: What do you love about summer fashion?
CK: In the summer it is a lot easier to mix and match pieces. My summer wardrobe is a lot more fun to create outfits with because there’s more flexibility.
CF: How would you describe your style?
CK: Preppy. I love wearing clean cut and simple outfits. It’s most important for me to look put-together.
CF: Where do you get your style inspiration?
CK: Pinterest and Marie Claire magazine. Pinterest is the best social media outlet to explore different trends and style. I like following different boards that highlight preppy and cute looks. My favorite magazine is Marie Claire. The articles are always full of easy to implement advice and tips for someone who likes a broader and international style.
CF: Whose closet would you raid and why?
CK: Rachel Berry from Glee, especially in the earlier seasons. I love her knee socks. The costume designer is able to incorporate them into every outfit Rachel wears. I try my best to do the same.
CF: What is your key accessory must-have?
CK: My silver rings. The first is a Claddagh Irish ring and the second is a Celtic knot. I got one from my dad, who is Irish, and the other is from a street fair in Edinburgh, Scotland. They are very simple but have a lot of meaning.
CF: What is one item in your closet you cannot live without?
CK: A Zara little black dress. I don’t think it will ever go out of style and it’s my go-to for fancy occasions. It has a high neck and a low back with a gold zipper detail. It’s a classic piece in my closet and I will be wearing it for years to come.
