Fashionista Spotlight

It may be a “man’s world,” but women can definitely wear the trousers. Menswear has continued and more frequently served as inspiration for designers’ collections for women. The best thing about androgynous fashion is you can go the whole mile for a big and bold impact, or you can simply pick and choose masculine influences to slip in to your everyday style. This Fashionista does just that and incorporates that tomboy toughness while still owning her feminine sophistication. You have a greater power to be true to yourself and have a style that excites and interests you.

Name: Bianca Smith

Major: Magazine Writing and Editing

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Bianca Smith: Today, I’m wearing a brown and black beanie and a Free People thermal. I have on Joe Jeans in a boyfriend cut that are cuffed at the ankles. I have on floral socks with my Dr. Marten Chelsea boots.

CF: How would you describe your style?

BS: I like to feel relaxed and comfortable. I think being a bit androgynous is sexy. I wear pieces that don’t overwhelm what I have to say. I’d rather accentuate my intellectual sophistication. That’s when I feel the most comfortable.

CF: What fashion item can’t you live without?

BS: My beanie has become a staple in my wardrobe. Whether I have a bad hair day or need the warmth to battle Chicago’s winter.

CF: What does fashion mean to you?

BS: Fashion, like any art, is specific to its artist. To me fashion is just a supplement to how I want to be perceived. My clothes are a complete extension of myself.

CF: What inspires you?

BS: The seasons inspire my choice of color as well as the city around me.

CF: Where do you like to shop?

BS: I always hit Urban Surplus and Nordstrom Rack, but Free People is my favorite.

CF: Do you have any favorite designers/brands?

BS: Marc Jacobs has be blowing my mind lately. Same with Stella McCartney and Tommy Hilfiger’s fall 2014 line.

How To:  So there you have it. You’ve stolen all the very best pieces of menswear to create a flattering and striking style all for yourself. As this Fashionista enjoys comfort as well, you can start off with basic or edgy boyfriend jeans. Style them with a thermal top and an optional button-down shirt for a layering effect. For balance, accessorize with a beanie and simple jewelry like this Fashionista’s Alex and Ani bracelets. And don’t forget your Dr. Marten boots, which come in various prints and colors to choose from.
