I always watch the spring and summer runway shows. Several trends were spotted like statement stripes and monochrome. Many of the looks on the runways consisted of black and white, but during the summer I like to say goodbye to darker colors and hello to color. Even though all the looks were fabulous, I knew that monochrome was not really going to be something that I rushed out and bought. I also have a tendency to steer clear from stripes as they can make you appear wider. So, you can imagine my surprise when I saw brands like Dolce&Gabbana flaunting bold black and white stripes as part of their collection. However, all my concerns about these trends stopped when I ran into this Fashionista. She wore a black and white zebra print sundress that encompassed both of these trends. Not only that, but by adding a green cardigan she made monochrome more summer friendly.

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?
Ashlei Shealey: Honestly, I’d have to say that I go through phases with my style. I’m constantly attracted to a variety of looks and I’m always open to experimenting. Overall though, I look for pieces that are easy, fun and sophisticated all at the same time.
CF: What is your favorite trend right now?
AS: I’m kind of obsessing over ankle strap shoes. Whether on high heels or flats, that sole thin strap makes a pair of shoes so sophisticated.
CF: This dress is really trendy right now, incorporating both monochrome and stripes seen in this season’s runway shows. What do you think about the style in Montreal?
AS: Montreal style is always so inspirational. You will always come across someone with a great outfit choice as you walk through campus or downtown which encourages you to experiment more with your own style. That’s what I love most about the fashion in this city.
CF: Where is your favorite place to shop in Montreal in order to stay on top of the latest trends?
AS: It’s difficult to choose just one, but my favorite place to shop would have to be H&M. You can’t leave that store without coming across a great find.
How To: When shopping for stripes it’s always helpful to keep in mind that vertical stripes will elongate your body while horizontal ones will accentuate parts making the appear fuller. It is fun to play around with both of these trends and incorporate them into the same dress. Now this is a monochrome striped dress I would consider. If you’re looking for something a little more subtle, here is a dress that combines stripes, monochrome and print like the one this Fashionista is wearing. Don’t forget a little color goes a long way, here is a cute cardigan that will add a splash to any outfit.
