FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Ann Haley

Fashionista Spotlight

Mixing patterns, properly accessorizing and perfect layers—this Fashionista has achieved this trifecta with her playful ensemble. Keeping things fun but still winter appropriate, she layered a simple black sweater over a polka-dot button-down. This simple combination can be worn over jeans or with a cute skirt and tights. This Fashionista completed her look with black skinny jeans, floral Dr. Martens, a floppy hat, bold red nails and a small black purse.

Name: Ann Haley

Major: Painting

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How does your major influence your style?

Ann Haley: I like to dress “cute” (at least what I consider to be cute), but being a painting major, I get pretty messy. But I still dress how I want to dress; I don’t let mess hold me back from wearing what I want to wear. I have just kind of accepted that all of my clothes will just not truly be “nice” because they all have paint on them. But I definitely only wear stuff I can feel comfortable in and move around in.

CF: How has your style evolved since your freshman year (in college)?

AH: I definitely own a lot more high-waisted pants/shorts than I did freshman year. I just don’t have time to worry about plumber’s butt!

CF: What is your favorite way to accessorize?

AH: Socks are important to me. And it’s kind of fun when someone notices your socks.

CF: If you could have brunch with anyone in the fashion industry, who would it be and why?

AH: Probably the Olsen twins. I’ve been a fan since I was a kid and I’m just impressed with how successful they are.

CF: What would you never be caught wearing?

AH: Those leggings that are supposed to look like jeans. The attempted trompe l’oeil isn’t really working for me. They just look like pants for dolls.

How To: To get this fun look, you’ll need to strike a balance between cute printed pieces and classic, solid colored staples. First, find a patterned button-down and a solid sweater to wear over it. You can go for a polka-dot blouse like today’s Fashionista wore or opt for something like this star print button-down. Next, find a cropped sweater that you can wear over either option. For the bottom half, go for classic skinny jeans or even a simple leather skirt. Finally, top everything off with floral print shoes, a simple hat and some gold rings.
