Maxi skirts. To borrow from Woody in Toy Story, “If you don’t have one, get one!” This wardrobe-changing and outfit-inspiring article changes easily from campus casual to evening elegance and will revolutionize the way you think about skirts. Scared about constricting your range of movement? A maxi skirt, with its typically flowing fabric, actually feels liberating. Patterned or solid, jersey or chiffon, these skirts are my go-to for a simple and incredibly comfortable knockout fall look.
Name: Ann Anosike
Major: Political Science
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Ann Anosike: I’m wearing a burgundy maxi skirt from Forever 21. The top and the subtle earrings are from Charlotte Russe.
CF: What’s one summer item you can’t wait to wear before fall hits campus?
AA: Because of the nice weather we are going to be enjoying for the next few weeks, my friends and I have decided that Mondays shall henceforth be “maxi Mondays.” So every Monday we wear (or try to wear) maxis.
CF: What are three items of clothing you simply can’t live without?
AA: I can’t live without ballet flats, some type of earrings (not really a clothing, but I almost always have earrings on) and comfortable jeans.
CF: What are you most looking forward to about fall fashion?
AA: I’m looking forward to oversized sweaters, knee-high winter boots and scarves.
CF: Name one clothing item every college student should love.
AA: I love maxi skirts because they are comfortable yet stylish, and I chose this color and style because the color is very rich and the skirt fits me the way I want a high-waisted maxi skirt to fit.
CF: Why should college students dress well on campus?
AA: It is a great moral booster to look good just for the fun of it.
How To: Start with a maxi skirt that speaks to you, whether it’s striped, solid, printed or patterned. Choose a simple blouse and cropped jacket like this one from Helmut Lang that won’t overwhelm the skirt. I love pairing my mermaid-style striped skirt with a black V-neck and a jean jacket. Strappy Steve Madden wedges or ballet-inspired flats will add a casual chic vibe no matter what weather you face. Add a short, simple gold necklace and stackable rings and complete the look with a kate spade leather watch, a chunky Tory Burch chain bracelet or a gold cuff to round out this breezy bohemian fall look.
