Fashionista Spotlight

For a number of students at University of Pennsylvania, fashion is more than just what you wear in the morning. This junior not only loves fashion, she also owns a custom apparel company.

Name: Aneesha Raghunathan

Major: Health and Societies

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: What role does fashion play in your life?

Aneesha Raghunathan: I started Hope Line Fashions three years ago. Hope Line Fashions is a nonprofit fashion and custom apparel line dedicated to empowering women and girls in India. 100 percent of the proceeds from the shirt sales and custom apparel orders help reduce barriers to education for impoverished girls in South India. So far, we have distributed backpacks, school supplies and textbooks to over 200 girls, and I am launching scholarship and mentorship programs in two areas of South India.

CF: What do you like about fashion?

AR: I believe that fashion is about feeling confident and empowered. It can also really change the way you look at things. It’s a universal form of expression, and clothing is a truly global product — fabric, styles and ideas, everything about fashion is global.

CF: How would you describe your style?

AR: I definitely like dark colors and outfits that play with fabrics (like pairing corduroy with leather or having leather on leggings).

CF: What are some of your favorite places to shop in Philly?

AR: South Street. There are a lot of cute jewelry and accessory stores that sell a really random assortment of things so you never know what you’ll find. There is this really quirky place called Blendo that even gives out free apple cider!

CF: What is one item you’d never be caught wearing?

AR: I can’t pull off maxi dresses. I feel like I drown in them.

How To: Layer on the different fabrics for a look that’s all about the details. A tweed-sleeve top adds unexpected detail to a T-shirt for a look that’s both casual and refined. Pair it with your favorite pair of leggings and suede booties, and you’ll be ready to take on the world. To support this Fashionista’s company, consider ordering shirts for your next student event through Hope Line by checking out the website.
