“I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity—all I hope for in my clothes.” —Yves Saint Laurent
The blue jean encompasses all of these characteristics and is a staple in American wardrobe. This classic is perfect year around and will be the first item in my suitcase for my return to campus. I spotted this Fashionista because I have been mentally planning a similar outfit: denim overload with a pop of neon. The layers make this an easy outfit for chilly classrooms.
Name: Aly Ricker
CollegeFashionista: Where do you get your style?
Aly Ricker: Many of my outfits I get the ideas from looking in magazines, online, what people are wearing on campus, etc. I also love to see what the employees at my favorite stores (Francesca’s, Nordstrom, etc.) are wearing for style inspiration. My best friend goes to a fashion school in New York, so I definitely look to her for styles to try! My friends have always made fun of me because my closet literally consists of three neutral colors (white, black, gray). I’ve been a little more daring lately, and the color selection in my closet is definitely growing!
CF: What is the perfect back-to-school outfit?
AR: When school first begins, I love to just throw on a comfortable, breezy summer dress with a cute pair of sandals and head to class. As it gets a little cooler, dark denim will definitely be my go-to, paired with a great top. And my watch… I never leave the house without it.
CF: What is your favorite item in your closet?
AR: Well I’m looking to purchase some brown Frye boots, and I’m guessing they will quickly become my favorite item in my closet! Aside from that, I have a denim jacket that I love to throw on to make any outfit a little bit trendier.
How To: In my world, the darker the jeans, the better. A dark wash is slimming and the easiest to pair with tops. Find a dark wash denim with slight stretch for added comfort while sitting in long lectures. Try these skinny jeans from Blank NYC. Next, a neon tank will give you an eye-catching pop of color needed to brighten up your mood on campus. A flowy tank will slightly dress up the look. This amazing Wildfox Couture watermelon tank will dress down the denim for a super fun look. Layer on a light-wash chambray button-up to vary the shades of denim in your outfit. Tons of colored bracelets and a tan leather bag are always a must with jeans. Easy outfit!
