FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Allison Yee

Fashionista Spotlight

The biggest legacy from the ‘90s—the grunge look—is definitely our go-to for early classes. We love it because it’s casual, comfy and chic. Unfortunately, this effortless look can also be interpreted as being unkempt. Sometimes, the flannel shirt and boyfriend jeans combo can turn out to be a bit too masculine for some. To embrace your inner Kate Moss without losing a feminine touch, you can try acid-washed materials. Layering an acid-washed denim jacket on top of your cute sundress, shows a mix of attitude and girlishness. Also, pairing up a poncho and acid-washed skinny jeans adds a bohemian twist to your grunge outfit. If you think that denim is too heavy for the spring, there is a wide variety of acid-washed cotton clothing on the market. It not only matches the weather, but also tones down the disheveled look. Remember, the ‘90s grunge is more than flannel shirts and your rolling stone T-shirt.

Name: Allison Yee

Major: Computer Science

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing, and where is it from?

Allison Yee: I’m wearing a blue dress from Forever 21, and my sandals are from Reflections. My backpack is from JanSport.

CF: What inspired your outfit today?

AY: I knew it’d be really hot today, so I wore a dress. When it’s hot, I always go for something light and less constricting. I feel free in a dress.

CF: Where do you usually shop?

AY: I go to H&M, Urban Outfitters and Forever 21 a lot. For shoes, I love Reflections—they have stores all over SoCal.

CF: Who is your style icon, and where do you get your inspiration?

AY: I go on fashion blogs, like Rack and Rouge; I also like Jenny Ong’s style on Neon Blush. Youtube channels inspire me, too. I often think about Jenn Im when I choose my outfits. She’s my style icon not only because she looks good in everything, but also because she’s very confident. I think that’s a very admirable trait! Emma Stone is another style icon I look up to.

CF: What is a trend that you want to try this spring?

AY: I really want to try the “ugly” shoe trend. They look very comfy.

How To: To replicate this Fashionista’s look, start with an acid-washed cobalt blue dress, grab a purple backpack and then throw on some accessories. Lastly, put on a pair of brown leather sandals, and you are good to go!
