Fashionista Spotlight

Those cold fall mornings are now creeping up on us. Although it can be tempting to throw on your slouchy sweatshirt and furry moccasins, this Fashionista reminds us you can be warm and comfortable and still totally chic! If you don’t already own a vest, it’s definitely one of the best pieces to carry you through those blending season chills. I also love that shorter booties are back in style this season because they are less edgy than combat boots and not as sexy as an over-the-knee pair either.

Name: Allison Kelly

Major: Marketing

Year: Sophmore

College Fashionista: Tell me about your outfit today.

Allison Kelly: It was pretty chilly when I woke up for class this morning so I knew I wanted to layer up! I chose this navy striped long sleeve shirt from Gap, my new J.Crew vest and Free People scarf to add a little pop of color. These boots are Matisse (I found them at DSW) and I’m carrying my books in my Longchamp. My watch is Michael Kors.

CF: What is your favorite thing to wear?

AK: I always feel my most confident in a dress. Whether it’s a sun dress on a nice day or a tight sequin mini for a night out in Boston, I adore feeling feminine and fun in dresses. I usually find my favorites at LF, Urban Outfitters and BCBGMAXAZRIA.

CF: What is one trend you absolutely can’t stand?

AK: That one’s easy—boyfriend jeans! My roommates constantly wear them and try to convince me that they’re on trend, but I just don’t see it. I can’t help but think they look like the dreadful “Mom jeans” and they really do nothing for a girl’s shape.

CF: What’s the secret to dressing fabulously all fall?

AK: Layers! Don’t be afraid to mix colors, patterns and textures. In fact, the better variety you have the more interesting you’ll look.

How To: I really appreciated what this Fashionista had to say about layering. This is definitely a style technique that takes a little practice, but more than anything, you have to be willing to experiment. Just as she advised, sometime mixing a wide variety of textures, colors and patterns can be much more appealing to the eye. My only warning is to be careful of your color choices. Try to stay in similar families to keep the outfit looking pulled together. Don’t let the dropping temperatures bring down your style sense too! Fight back with some fire outfits, and make sure to actually keep warm in lots of layers.
