Fashionista Spotlight

On a rainy day it’s pretty much impossible to find anyone with a smile on his or her face. Lucky for me, I found this Fashionista who automatically made a cold and wet day in D.C. feel much brighter. If her gorgeous red hair wasn’t enough to get my attention, the red lips and neon sneakers definitely did it for me!

Name: Alexa Zanikos

Major: Criminal Justice and Dance

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Alexa Zanikos: I’m wearing a J.Crew denim button-up, a black dress from H&M, high-top Vans and a black leather bag I found at a thrift shop in Texas.

CF: I really like everything about this outfit, but what’s your favorite part of it?

AZ: My sneakers! I’ve had them since 7th grade when I went though a weird skateboarding phase and I started wearing them again last year. I love that I can walk for miles in them and I’ve never seen anyone else wearing the same ones!

CF: How has your look changed since you moved from San Antonio, Texas to Washington, D.C.?

AZ:  It’s gotten a lot edgier! People are a lot more laid-back in south Texas, so it’s been so fun to get to come to D.C. and reinvent myself a little. I take more risks and I’m not afraid to experiment, but I still like to keep a mellow south Texas vibe.

CF: Who or what inspires your style?

AZ: My style is inspired by all sorts of things, from magazines to musicians, but mostly I’m inspired by the people around me. I take style cues from my friends and people I see on campus and mix and match until I find something I look and feel good in.

How To: To accomplish a look like this Fashionista’s, the first step is to find a cool pair of high-tops. Designers like Vans and Converse have plenty of choices when it comes to high-top sneakers. The base for this look is her little black dress. Therefore, a LBD, like the ones available at Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters, is not only essential for this look but also perfect for any occasion. For nighttime, simply exchange those high-tops for some greats heels like these Vince Camuto ones and trade the denim shirt for a silk button down or leather jacket.
