The first week of class: our wallets and depleted bank accounts wallow in despair and our backs prepare for potential scoliosis that these massive textbooks will surely give us, yet we rejoice at reunions with friends, lack of work and the time we have free. What kept me awake during my speech class yesterday was definitely admiring the fellow interpreting major sitting to my right. One of my fashion pet peeves is seeing a fashion overkill. This often occurs with the poor combination of statement pieces, often overwhelming the outfit, making it a distasteful mess. This Fashionista’s ensemble did just the opposite. Her balance of strong and soft pieces made her outfit eye-catching and gorgeous!
Name: Alexa Vicario
Major: American Sign Language (Educational Interpreter)
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Alexa Vicario: I am wearing a Kimchi Blue black coat, a patterned scarf from Target, dress from H&M, floral leggings from Urban Outfitters, boots from Goodwill and a bag from online. I don’t remember the exact website from where I got it, but I got it because it resembles the bag that Ramona Flowers had in the movie Scott Pilgrim.
CF: What inspires your personal style?
AV: What inspires my style the most is probably color. When I was younger I used to say “If I wear enough colors, eventually something will match.” I obviously don’t dress like that anymore but color is definitely a big thing for me. It always genuinely reflects my tone or mood. I love having something like purple or bright blue to highlight muted or earth tones to break up monotony.
CF: Whose closet (past or present) would you raid?
AV: I would probably raid either Twiggy’s (her wardrobe from the ’60s of course) or Zooey Deschanel. Twiggy embodies that beautiful mod side that I love and Zooey is really big into wearing clothing styles that very much suit my style and body type. Plus who would NOT want to rummage around in that closet of hers!?
CF: What is one fashion staple that you cannot live without?
AV: I could not live without leggings. If you look in my closet, it’s probably the item I have the most of with the most diversity as well. I cannot even begin to count how many pairs I own and what lengths/size/styles. They’re great because you can wear them in any season because their thicknesses vary and also they can give some extra flair to your legs when wearing anything that exposes some leg!
CF: Who is your fashion icon?
AV: My favorite fashion icon really has been Twiggy. She was really a weird combination of things many people found unattractive: short hair, skinny shapeless figure and giant eyelashes. But she could work anything that she wore and so amazingly. Plus, that cockney accent and the fact that she was famous in the middle of mod culture in Britain just seals the deal for me.
How To: Alexa’s ensemble was a myriad of quirky pieces that worked. Boots from Aldo look fantastic with these leggings from Urban Outfitters. This dress will help tone down the eccentricity of the other pieces. To foster my fondness for anything feline, I found this scarf from Modcloth. A peacoat can complement any outfit tastefully, as well as keep you toasty! Ramona Flowers, for those who have not heard of the Scott Pilgrim movie or comics, is one of the main characters, and carries her star messenger at all times. A seller on Etsy makes these bags in an array of colors. Finish with a bold beanie.
