Name: Afton Lane
CollegeFashionista: How has Spelman College influenced or changed your style?
Afton Lane: Spelman College has elevated my style by opening my eyes to the different styles available depending on location (midwest, east coast, the south). As well as knowing when a designated style is appropriate to wear to a specific event or endure various weather conditions. Especially when it’s cold I now know how to mix and match different sweaters and scarfs and bottoms to remain warm as well as stylish.
CF: What is one item in your closet you cannot live without and why?
AL: Being a native of Houston, TX it is mandatory to always have a pair of blue jean shorts to withstand the blistering heat. Also, they are my favorite dress item due to the muscle definition of my legs in which I take much pride in showing off.
CF: Who is one style icon that you admire?
AL: My greatest inspiration when discussing fashion would have to be Adrienne Bailon, for her original, classy, simplistic yet tastefully colorful style. Also her ability to wear all genres of fashion from chic to couture, preppy to urban hipster and boho to casual/sporty.
What are your favorite stores to shop in?
My favorite stores are Zara’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, J.Crew, Forever 21, H&M and I shop at Michael Khors and Coach for accessories and bags.
CF: Do you think that any aspects of your personality are reflected through the way that you dress?
AL: Absolutely! I like to keep it versatile according to my mood, occasion or weather condition, which allows my style to be unattached to one category, like my personality which is hard to put a label on as it is conducive to all.
How To: The oversized camoflauged military style jackets are very hot right now! Everywhere you turn there is camouflage this season. Try wearing an oversized camouflaged jacket paired with black jeans just like this Fashionista. A black or white solid color shirt underneath will be perfect. Add a pop of color with a scarf. You can even match the color of your scarf to the color of your shoes. Pretend you wear the crown just like Miss Spelman, and walk out the door with your reigning queen smile.
