The sun in Rome is beginning to shine and with that comes a new array of fun and edgy style. Denim on denim is one of the hardest looks to tackle, but this Fashionista does it with ease-light on top and a dark (in this case, black) denim finish on the bottom. The studs, combat boots, black jeans and beanie create a punk-rock vibe. She balances out her rocker look of a Beatles T-shirt with a feminine raspberry lip. Music is a strong influence over this Fashionista, not only in her outfits, but in her perspective on life.
Name: Abbie Pagliaro
Major: Visual Studies, Psychology minor
CollegeFashionista: Tell me what you’re wearing and where you got the pieces.
Abbie Pagliaro: I went to H&M to find this T-shirt-I knew I’d find a classic band T-shirt there. My vest and belt are from Forever 21 and my shoes are Nine West. My hat is from Urban Outfitters—it’s men’s, don’t tell—and I also went to Urban Outfitters for my high-waisted jeans. I’m tall, and they’re the only reasonably priced place that sell jeans that are long enough!
CF: What is your favorite thing about this look?
AP: It’s casual but still edgy. In Rome, everyone dresses up a lot. I like to be comfy and casual but still blend into the Roman lifestyle. I always add the red lip for a pop, but my ultimate goal is comfort. Once you achieve a comfortable look, all that matters are the accessories.
CF: What are your wardrobe essentials?
AP: Black jeans—I wear them practically every day. [I use] accessories, such as scarves, hats, jewelry, to spice up the outfit. For Italy, we can’t pack a lot on the plane, so I packed a ton of basic stuff. When you’re limited on clothing, the key is to accessorize enough to make any outfit stand out.
CF: I noticed your Beatles shirt immediately. Does music influence your style?
AP: Oh, definitely. Art and music both do. Music influences my everyday life. It can turn any sad day into a happy one and any boring day into a fun one. As far as my outfits go, it definitely depends on what I’m listening to while I’m getting ready. When I’m listening to Twenty One Pilots, I’m edgy. When I’m listening to Ingrid Michaelson, I’m feminine. While I’m heading to London for spring break, I’ll most definitely be jamming to some Beatles and rocking this T-shirt.
CF: What are your three favorite bands right now?
AP: Currently I’ve been listening to a lot of MR MS, James Vincent McMorrow and St. Lucia. Other than that I like a lot of old stuff.
How To: Start with a cropped band T-shirt. You can find these anywhere from the thrift shop (with the help of a little DIY) to Urban Outfitters. This Ramones shirt from H&M may be simply tucked into the high-waisted jeans or cut into a crop top to achieve this look. Next add a denim top. Although I love the use of a denim vest in this look, I know it’s not quite as warm yet back home. I found this light denim jacket from PacSun that has hues of a darker wash of denim that will create a graceful contrast with the dark jeans of the outfit. Any black denim will work for the bottom half of this look, but I chose these super high-waisted dark denim jeans instead of opting for black to pull out the hues of the darker denim in the jacket. Add black booties (I love these from Forever 21 for the spring), a beanie, a sharp necklace and a pop of raspberry lip and your edgy outfit is complete! Don’t forget to jam out to your favorite bands while getting ready, it might just inspire a rocking outfit like this Fashionista and lead you straight into the FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT.
