It's getting very confusing being in the midst of cyclical fashion. We’re being blasted with proclamations of decade revivals — "We love the 70s this summer!" "Valentino nods to 40s glamour!" — and now I’m going to give a prior apology for throwing the '80s in your face. I find it easiest to parallel our relationships with styles with our relationships with men: Our obsession with the 70s was a short and sweet summer love affair with picnics and over-enthusiastic suncream application. But the '80s! The '80s is the elusive high school crush you never quite got over. Roland Barthes would have been able to draw up a fabulous matrix to illustrate it. In the mean time, we've got this Fashionisto on Oxford Street to aid us in our qualms about the '80s. He's donning an acid-wash denim jacket, Rihanna graphic tee, chinos and black high tops. And despite the ebbing London heat, he's looking pretty chilled.
For reasons I can't articulate, '80s style is so, so much better for men than for women, and it's present here in acid-wash denim and hi-top trainers. There's something very shouty-shouty about '80s fashion and it works well when you cool it down with something a little more sombre and formal, like these chinos. Acid-wash denim, on the other hand, is a very tricky subject. Especially for the ladies. I was reading Hadley Freeman in the Guardian a while back saying that 'nobody ever looked good in acid-wash denim. This is fashion which isn't interested in being flattering; it's about making a reference.' I think this Fashionisto has got the acid-wash badge under his belt, however. This is a very good jacket and probably picked up from a vintage store — Beyond Retro is nearby Oxford St and is a treasure trove of beautiful and eclectic pieces.
Hint: Hi-tops are infamous for brightly coloured designs, but the rowdy styles are a lot harder to pull off. They're also a lot harder to match. You can still get a statement pair with jazzy textures like this fur pair from Vivienne Westwood, studded Converse or crocodile skin from Jimmy Choo.
