Nicky Hilton is a woman of many roles and titles. Designer. Busnesswoman. Model. Fashionista. Influencer. Her newest title, however,  is author. Her book, 365 Style, gives the reader insight on her fashion methods and approach to shopping. How often do you open your closet brimming with clothes and say, “I have nothing to wear.” Hilton’s book simplifies the literal and figurative clutter for you by using an equation to break down what you should own for your individual lifestyle needs.

We caught up with Hilton as she discussed her new book, what inspired her and some must-have pieces for fall. Be sure to pick up a copy her book, 365 Style, for more from this multi-talented fashion insider.

CollegeFashionista: What inspired you to write 365 Style?

Nicky Hilton: I have loved fashion since I was a little girl. My whole live has revolved around fashion. I started modeling as a teenager in New York. Soon after, I began designing handbags, clothing and jewelry collections. I have seen and learned a lot. I thought it would be fun to compile it all into a book.

CF: Do you think that the essential pieces change for people at different ages, or stay the same from college through adulthood?

NH: I would say for the most part yes. I know that today I’m still wearing my favorite staples I was wearing in high school and college. I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing blazers and ballet flats.

CF: Outside of the essentials, what other types of “fun” pieces do you think should be included in people’s closets?

NH: I love collecting all sort of unique accessories – jewelry, handbags, scarves, etc. They can transform an outfit. Whenever I travel, I try and pick up pieces that I know I can’t find back home. My favorites are handmade jewelry stands and local flea markets. I try and do some research online before each trip.

CF: What are some of your favorite fall trends?

NH: I’m really liking the cape trend. I recently wore one to the Valentino show in Paris. It’s a cute alternative to a pea coat. I also love over the knee boots and plaid.

CF: What is your own fashion weakness?

NH: Handbags for sure! I think they make or break an outfit. I’m not so into the it-bag anymore. I think it’s lame to wear a bag that every other person is. I like unusual designs.

CF: What are five must-have pieces for college students?

NH: Read the ‘Black List’ chapter in my new book 365 Style. I talk about the five items that every girl needs.

CF: How has your style evolved since you were in college?

NH: In college I was all about comfort. I lived in track suits and sneakers. As I got older, I realized the importance of putting an effort into your appearance. We’re constantly making first impressions even when we don’t realize it.
