Even those who are oblivious to the ins and outs of the fashion world have heard the age-old saying: “Never wear white after labor day.” Well Fashionistas and Fashionistos, rules are meant to be broken, are they not? White should not be a color banished from your wardrobe just because the calendar does not read June, July or August. With appropriate adjustments, white can be stylish all year round. If you follow this Fashionista’s lead, your favorite white summer dress can become a fall staple too.
Avoid wearing just pure white. If you dress in colors that complement it, off-white can be a very good hue for fall. This Fashionista pairs her ivory lace dress with a classic black lightweight coat. The clean lines and basic color keep her warm while showcasing the dress as the eye-catching piece of the ensemble. Nordstrom offers a wide array of stylish black coats for fall that won’t overwhelm a delicate look like this one; try belted coats, trench-style coats, leather jackets, peacoats or capes.
Another way to make a white piece look more like fall is by adding a classic fall element to the look. This Fashionista does so by adding brown leather slouchy boots. Isabel Marant’s fall 2011 runway was home to several slouchy boots. Scarves, high knit socks and cozy cardigans are other ways to make a warm weather look appropriate for the cold.
Fashion should be seen as something fun, and Fashionistas shouldn’t allow their creativity to be stifled by rules. So when getting dressed this week, remember that rules are made to be broken. Everyone loves a rebel.
