As style geeks, we all strive to be fashion forward; mixing and matching newfound trends. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it’s a disaster. It’s difficult to navigate the minefield of fashion when mixing new and old trends, but this week’s Fashionista did it seamlessly. Each component of her outfit reflected some trend from the past year: colored denim, statement jewelry, smoking slippers and ladylike lace. This put-together ensemble was a precarious balancing act that appears effortless, and almost casual. She achieved what seemed like the impossible, and I applaud her.

CollegeFashionista: Describe your personal style.
Katie Koplan: My southern influence has stuck with me regardless of where I am, so I do a lot of basics topped off with bold statements. You can never go wrong with a black top and a turquoise necklace. I love wearing leggings, boots, oversized sweaters and chunky scarves to keep warm when I'm walking to class in the winter.
CF: What are your favorite current trends?
KK: I love the lace and peplum trend! The whole idea of dressing ladylike has made a huge comeback after the grungy boho look was big a few years ago. It all ties back to the southern influence.
CF: Where do you get your style inspiration?
KK: I'm inspired by so many people and things in my daily surroundings. But celebrity-wise, Kate Middleton and Miranda Kerr both come to mind. Kate always looks so classy and ladylike, and recently Miranda Kerr always manages to look chic in slim pants and blouses. I'm also addicted to Pinterest!
CF: So which celebrity would you most like to share a closet with?
KK: I love everything Olivia Palermo wears. She always is so put together with a mix of classy and trendy pieces. I'm sure her closet consists of some amazing vintage handbags, shoes and jewelry.
How To: Add a classy southern vibe to your own wardrobe, like this week’s Fashionista, by starting with a ladylike lace blouse. Colored denim in a muted shade, rather than the vibrant jewel tones of this summer, keeps the look appropriate for autumn. Skip the classic ballet flats and go for neutral loafers to make the ensemble fresh and modern. Bold but sophisticated accessories, like tortoiseshell sunglasses and a jeweled statement necklace, perfect the look.
