My name is Emily Rudy and I am studying Communication and Theater at Christopher Newport University, near Virginia Beach. Fashion is my passion. I admire all types, however I mainly draw inspiration from the '20s, the '50s and the '90s eras. I am an independent fashion blogger, journalist and Style Guru for CollegeFashionista, hoping to one day become a fashion designer; Hollywood’s finest. As I said, I draw inspiration from particular eras in history, however I also draw much of it from movies, models, designers, friends and fellow classmates as well. This is one of the reasons I am thrilled to be joining the CollegeFashionista team, specifically showcasing the STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK column. I am so very excited to share the Fashionista’s and Fashionisto’s fabulously unique styles with the world and get the opportunity to be exposed to my fellow Style Gurus’ talent and knowledge as well.
Street style is just one of the institutions I admire in the fashion world. For example, I draw inspiration specifically from movies such as Sex and the City, Almost Famous and The Royal Tenenbaums. The Social Media Bible by Lon Safko and David Brake, Chanel: A Woman of Her Own by Axel Madsen, and Fashion Since 1900 by Valerie Mendes and Amy de la Hay are by far my three favorite fashion-inspired books, and are what primarily drew me into the world of fashion. As far as fashion models go, Gemma Ward, Natasha Poly, Angela Lindvall and Vlada Rosylyakova provide me with much inspiration, as well as Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQuee, and Maison Martin Margiela’s designs.
Now that you know a little bit about me, I would like to share with you some aspects regarding my personal style. For one, if I had to sum it up in a few words, I would describe it as quirky, grunge and high-fashion. In the photograph above, I am wearing a pair of pale pink lace, high-waisted shorts from Forever 21. These are paired with an oversized sheer button-up from a European store called Cotton On. The golden lace-up boots are 1962 specials thrifted from a vintage boutique in Richmond, Virginia. The brown leather chainstrap purse is from Forever 21, as well as the wide-rimmed readers and gold Egyptian bracelet seen on my left arm. The two antique clock necklaces I am wearing are from H&M’s jewelry collection. I am a huge fan of accessorizing and mixing and matching. For example, I love wearing boots with shorts and skirts, and loose shirts with tights bottoms and vice versa. I take my style to the next level, always striving for fierce and clashing mixtures. I rarely stay in the fashion boundaries and am forever searching for things that scream unique and give off a sense of robust energy. As I said, fashion is my passion. I find aspects in it that many do not. In my opinion, all styles tell stories. You can learn so much about someone from their outfit alone. Style has the ability to not only make someone individual and unique, but it also has the power to teach, tell, and captivate. That is the beauty of fashion, it does just that; makes life beautiful.
It is truly an honor to finally be a part of such a wonderful organization and to support something I love so much. I hope to get enjoyment out of all my readers, for I know they bring me nothing shy of it. I cannot wait to share my work with others and showoff the fabulous CNU talent I have the pleasure to witness everyday. I am ready to begin my CollegeFashionista experience and take on the responsibility as one of CollegeFashionista’s Style Gurus for summer 2012!
