Throughout history, art has inspired fashion in major ways. From Yves Saint Laurent’s 1965 Mondrian dress based off of the work of Piet Mondrian, to the Van Gogh inspired dresses at Rodarte’s spring/summer 2012 ready-to-wear fashion show—Art has always been an inspiration to fashion designers and enthusiasts alike. This passionista is not only inspired by art, but she creates the art which inspires her. Using a spray paint can as her weapon of choice, she takes on intimidating blank canvasses with confidence. Seemingly with no particular rhyme or reason, she sprays unknown galaxies that look so real you’d think they were photographed. This budding young graphic artist, just nineteen, shares with CollegeFashionista how it all began and what it means to her, as well as some tips for readers interested in this eccentric form of art.
Name: Shannon Drabant
Passion: Spray Paint Space Art
Year: Sophomore
CollegeFashionista: What first drew you to this unique art form that later developed into a passion?
Shannon Drabant: A girl at my high school spray painted a picture with a lot of different images. In the top corner, there was a planet. I thought it would be cool to paint full pictures of just planets and space. So, I went home and the first picture I spray painted was a success. I stuck with it after that.
CF: Does this creativity translate into your personal style?
SD: Yes, I have gotten more creative and courageous with my style because of my art. I use the colors of my art in my wardrobe. Take what I am wearing today. Blue is the focal point, and black and white are the accents—just like in my painting.
CF: Do you have any tips for readers who might want to try out this unique style of art?
SD: If you are interested in space art, I would suggest getting poster board, some spray paint (blue and black to start with), a magazine to smear the paint, and a circle shape for your planets (you can use your spray can lids). It may seem complicated at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. Just have fun with it!
