STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Embrace Masculinity

Style Advice of the Week

As can be seen in some of my previous articles, specifically this one, I am a huge fan of combining styles. When I spotted this Fashionista with her menswear inspired blazer layered over a lacey feminine top, I knew I had to take her picture. I love the combination of the masculine and feminine pieces in this look. The blazer and the shoes are classic pieces, with a clean and structured feel to them. Both of which are very masculine elements, but can be done right when paired with certain accessories, like a lace top and fun modern jewelry. I think that in this day and age experimenting with different styles is very important. There is no more black and white when it comes to gender in fashion. Crossing over styles is what helps make your look unique and modern.

This look (or combination of looks) has been popular in the fashion industry for a few years now and could be seen in various collections during New York Fashion Week this year. Ralph Lauren has always been a fan of the masculine twist and his spring 2013 collection is no different. The runway was full of structured jackets and trouser pants, as well as floral patterns and bright red accents. Accents are a great way to add a feminine touch to any look. Hair bows are one of the girliest items that I can think of and will transform even the most masculine of looks. American Apparel is a great place to pick up one of those!

There are tons of great pieces that are more masculine structured but can still work for the female form. I love the laced shoes that this Fashionista wore with her outfit. They remind me of a man's loafer shoes. I can picture them looking great with tights and a cute floral dress, like this, for fall. Another way to channel this combo look is through a leather motorcycle jacket. These jackets have a very edgy and tough look, which can often be seen as very manly. However, the look can be easily softened with a flowy dress or a pop of pink. If you need some inspiration, or are in the market for a new leather jacket, Doma makes some really beautiful ones and does a great job styling them in their look book.

So remember Fashionistas, next time you see a piece that you think is too manly don’t shy away from it. Embrace it and find a way to work in feminine details for a modern and unique look.
