STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Style Surprises

Style Advice of the Week

One of the best things about fashion, and life for that matter, is the element of surprise. A jolt of the unexpected keeps you on your toes and looking forward. This sense of surprise can come from wacky, bold pieces that stand out like Lady Gaga's style,  or sometimes it originates from the smaller details. My fashion surprise this week came in the form of this Fashionista’s polka dot pants. I was even more surprised when she told me that they were from Abercrombie & Fitch. As a retailer of classic Americana style clothing, I wouldn’t expect this quirky pattern from them — surprise! But I love how it adds a fun perspective to their assortment while still maintaining their signature, traditional appeal.

Zoom out to this Fashionista’s look at large. The ensemble is the perfect marriage of classic, menswear and offbeat feminine touches. Her leather loafers and trench coat look like they were stolen right out of her father’s closet. These items balance her floral scarf and polka dot pants, creating a chic interplay of styles. She finishes her ensemble with an oversized satchel in a contrasting shade of chestnut.

This Fashionista’s mix and match aesthetic reminded me of the J.Crew style and its creative director Jenna Lyons. In a recent interview, Lyons commented: “It’s so hard to be surprised anymore.” She explained her company’s strategy to “add a layer of interest.” I believe that is what every Fashionista is trying to do through their clothes. Each piece works to create a look that is different from everything else out there. To be heard in this noisy world, I suggest finding one bold piece every now and again. Look for something with a sense of humor, like this Fashionista’s whimsical, polka dot pants. Use classic staples to balance this item. A khaki trench or a polished ballet flat will do the trick. Go ahead and surprise yourself. Be your own savior from the monotony of the expected.
