STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Sharp Coat

Style Advice of the Week

Winter in Columbus can test the spirits of even the most annoyingly cheery people. When the skies insist on a blanket of gray nearly every day, it becomes difficult to stay positive. Harder yet, is to remain fashionable for class. But today’s Fashionista is a testament to the power of a fabulous coat. She defies my typical advice of dressing in color to brighten the environment. Instead, she opts for a two-toned gray coat — fighting fire with fire. I have to say I respect her approach.

The beauty of this Fashionista’s look comes in the crisp lines of her trench. When I asked to take her photo, she commented that she wished she had put more effort into getting ready that day. Well, I would never have guessed! The clean silhouette of her jacket immediately pulls her look together, keeping the ensemble polished and modern. Also, notice how she mimics the two-toned feature of her coat by allowing her light gray socks to peek out from under her dusty brown combat boots. This touch keeps the outfit balanced from top to bottom by adding visual weight to her feet. She offers subtle color contrast with her rose skinny jeans as well. This color is also present near her face in the pink birds of her scarf. Even her bauble earrings complement the look. These black and brown pieces match the hue of her boots, offering another layer of cohesion.

I think what we can learn from today’s Fashionista is that sometimes if you have a sharp coat, the rest of the details will work themselves out. Find a piece with tailored construction, like today’s Fashionista. You can keep the colors muted or opt for a bolder option. Either way, find one that will give you that extra something on your way out the door. Think of it as your armor for enduring the rest of the winter. Add in a pair of colored skinny jeans and a pair of combat boots, as this Fashionista did, and your style will become impervious to the weather. Need more inspiration? Carven’s latest ready-to-wear show nails this idea with divine coat options.

The lyrics of Cake come to mind at this moment. All he wants is a girl with a “short skirt and a long jacket.” Well, long jacket? Check. As for the short skirt, I’ll leave that part up to you.
