STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Color Me Impressed

Style Advice of the Week

It is the time of the season. For what you ask? Well, it is time to glue ourselves in front of the television to watch the parade of Hollywood celebrities strut down the red carpet. That’s right the Oscar buzz is in the air, and it has us all thinking about grandiose fashion. From Prada to Dior, viewing our favorite designers on our favorite actresses can be more fun than the runway shows. Now that the big night has passed, we will all have inevitably put our two cents in as amateur fashion critics. So in the midst of this fashion critique, I am left to wonder: how do our peers judge our fashion sense on a daily basis? Clearly, we are not scrutinized with the intensity of Joan Rivers’ scathing reviews but people are looking nonetheless. It begs the question, how do we add up?

Well, today’s Fashionista scores a ten. When the gray days seem never-ending in Columbus, fashion often falls by the wayside. Students stop caring about what others think and simply try to make it out the door for their 8 am with matching socks. But today’s Fashionista illustrates how simple winter dressing can be. She jazzes up her neutral coat with pops of color. Her velvet, forest green legging pants and vibrant blue scarf peek out as if to remind us of the spring that lies ahead. She keeps the ensemble cohesive with a pair of classic, two-toned riding boots. For an added surprise, she wears a whimsical, patchwork backpack that contains all of the colors in her ensemble. I love the ease of this Fashionista’s style. It is a refreshing reminder that all you need is few colorful details to inspire happiness among your fashion-conscious peers.

No designer understands this concept better than Anna Sui. Her fall 2013 ready-to-wear collection was brimming with vibrant hues and rich patterns. Take a look for some eclectic inspiration. While Oscar fashion can rely on silhouette, rich fabrics and not to mention, millions of dollars worth of jewels to create interest, color is the cash-strapped student’s best friend. Start your outfit with a pair of comfortable, jade pants and find cheerful accessories to complement. An elephant print scarf or a pom-pom adorned hat will do the trick. With a few pieces that are out of the ordinary, you will undoubtedly win the praise of your classmates. No acceptance speech required.
