Last week’s AEO campaign made me think a lot about shorts. While wearing patterned shorts in 30-degree weather made me yearn for spring, it also made me think about the ways to make shorts wearable now, even with snow on the ground. One of the most basic ways to solve this dilemma is to add tights to the equation.
This Fashionista’s polka-dot, high-waisted shorts looked amazing with a pair of black tights and brown leather belt. Think of the floral patterned shorts at Hermès with an added layer for warmth. The long dress coat and lace-up booties also added stylish but practical elements. I especially like the dressiness of the coat against her shorts because they appear to be a floaty skirt.
I love this outfit because it is proof that students can wear shorts in Providence in early March without freezing. The key? Tights. A pair of basic black tights (or if it is particularly cold, North Face thermal leggings) can winterize a cool pair of patterned shorts. Another option is to jazz up basic denim jean shorts that do not want to wait until the snow melts. In this case, a pair of colorful or patterned tights are a fun way to add some color to an outfit. I personally like these deep gold tights from HUE, but any vibrant tights can add this extra warmth and color. For the next few weeks, I will enjoy this shorts-and-tights combination, eagerly awaiting the days ahead in which I will be able to wear shorts on their own.
