Dress to Impress—Business Casual Outfit Tips

Before I went to college, I had nothing remotely close business casual in my wardrobe. As I went to different meetings, presentations, and interviews I started to accumulate some pieces that were able to pass as professional looking. However, what I noticed is that a lot of people were wearing very similar outfits; it was almost like looking into a sea of black blazers. Ever since then I have tried to incorporate particular pieces to elevate my business wardrobe. Here I have three helpful tips that can help you stand out from the crowd and make a huge difference in your business casual outfits.

1—Add color to your outfits. When it comes to business casual, I have noticed that a majority of people stick to the basic black and white color scheme. However, adding a pop of color is a simple way to make yourself stand out. Blazers are such an easy piece to throw on before a meeting or presentation, but they can have a such a powerful impact when they are a color other than gray or black. For this look, I channeled my inner Elle Woods and paired a light pink blazer, a white lace top, and classic black pants.

2—Patterned pieces automatically spice up an outfit.  From animal print to polka dots to floral, there are a plethora of patterns to choose from. What I like best about this tip is that you can either go really bold with your pattern choice or a little subtle. No matter what pattern you choose, either way, a print has the ability to add more interest to what you are wearing. My favorite way to incorporate pattern is through pattern pants; these particular pants are from Old Navy.

3—Do not to forget about your shoes.  As Marilyn Monroe once said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” Shoes just give an extra little something to tie your whole look together. My favorite pair goes hand and hand with tip number two; they are a leopard patterned flats from H&M.

What I love most about fashion is that you can wear things that make you feel comfortable, confident, and embody who you are. As we start to enter the intern life/working world, it is important to remember this and go beyond the pant suits and button-down shirts. Be bold not just in the work you do but in the outfits you wear.
