One of my favorite aspects of fall and winter fashion is the variety of textiles that are worn. Tis the season for corduroys, cashmere and quilted outerwear. This Fashionisto wears some of these fabrics in wardrobe staples and accessories. His corduroy pants are a great change-up from the typical denim or chinos option, and his scarf is practical but also adds color and depth to his ensemble.
I personally love cords for men and women. They’re sometimes seen as somewhat dated or dopey, but now there are many modern options and cuts available if you keep an eye out. Take these J. Crew corduroys in a slim-straight fit; they provide a more tailored-yet-still-casual feel to your look. Another great aspect of cords is their versatility. Granted, they will always tend to be on the casual side, they can look great with a basic pair of lace-ups, boots or brogues on bottom and a basic tee, button-up or Henley on top.
If you really want to delve into the prep school style, wear your cords with a Fair Isle sweater. Like corduroys, the Fair Isle sweater can be seen as only meant for grandpas. Now there is a wide spectrum, and yes there are the ones that should only be worn at an ugly sweater party, but there are some smart ones out there as well. The prices do range from the covetable yet out of reach varieties, to the affordable gems like this Odin New York for Target sweater. This is the time where I say again how fantastic capsule collections are for the masses because they can obtain either big names for low prices, or obscure and expensive lines on a budget.
Now let’s not forget about this Fashionisto’s accessory – the man scarf. His scarf has a classic check pattern, and adds a great jolt of color to an otherwise neutral-filled outfit. A big trend in scarves now is the “infinity” or “circle scarf”. They are functional, effortless and chic – what more can you want from an accessory? American Apparel supplies a great version with a vast variety of color options.
So whether it’s an everyday item or accessory, try to incorporate some texture to your outfits this season as a way to update your closet.
Hint: Like denim and chinos, corduroys have been given the colorized treatment, so go bold and get a pair in red, or unexpected yet understated with an inky blue.
