Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, fall marks the start of new beginnings. You’re meeting up with old friends for dinner, making new connections with students and professors in classes and hopefully – if you live in New York City – you’re networking at an internship. In other words, for the fashion-enthused, a fresh wardrobe is in order. But, if you want to be especially savvy during these months (you are on a college budget after all), you’ve got to understand the process of transitional dressing.
Not only will you have to collect pieces for all sorts of weather, you’ll also have to be ready to jump from one occasion to the next. Sure, studying CollegeFashionista’s What to Wear column will help you out with styling advice, but when it comes to shopping, Macy’s mstylelab has got you covered. The department boasts a slew of labels that are infused with just the right flair. From Levi’s signature jeans and American Rag’s range of boho-esque sweaters, you’re set for the coffee shop or class. And, the dresses by GUESS and Material Girl will take you from an interview to a night out.
One quick browse through the mstylelab, and putting together outfits will seem the easiest task you’ve completed all week. Trust, this is the key to pulling off college stress free with an extra boost of confidence. My first look is all about denim. My chambray dress from American Rag meets Levi’s dark Trucker jacket giving off a subtle girlish vibe that’s not too saccharine thanks to the casualness of rolled sleeves and a quick updo. I decided to work with denim simply to stress its pivotal role in our closets. As students, it’s crucial to be as comfortable as possible while still maintaining an element of structure. In other words, our aim is to be practical, yet put together. That’s why the mstylelab stocks only the best of brands when it comes to the live-in material.
And, when you need to up the fancy factor, a demure frock with a few minor details will work wonders. This marled knit pick is by Speechless, and while it’s just as appropriate for a presentation as it is for date night, the leather trim makes it feel totally unique. You can pair it with heels, wear it with tights or remove the belt and add a bold statement necklace. Regardless, this is surely one of the most versatile numbers I’ve picked up in awhile.
Last, I’m playing with autumn’s natural tones in a Fresh Brewed peplum sweater and skinnies. The olive green and navy stripes offset the lighter wash of my American Rag jeans. Plus, I love to try to complete a getup without the help of any black. I went for a cropped, zipper-embellished ankle so as not to take away from my Dolce Vita booties, which complete all three ensembles. From the luxe suede uppers to the broken-in leather, they’re the very definition of transitional, and just what you need to get off on the right foot this semester.
