CollegeFashionista X American Eagle Outfitters: Day 17

Exclusive Feature

The season of “April showers” and “May flowers” is on its way, and with warmer temperatures upon us, it’s time for cooler (and shorter) clothing. As we start to put our pants, coats and heavy sweaters towards the back of our closets, a new garment is coming out to replace them: shorts.

Denim is making a huge comeback lately, and every trend imaginable is working its way onto jeans, denim jackets and vests and, of course, shorts. These pieces are rapidly hitting the racks and they are covered in bold patterns and prints. The American Eagle Outfitters Printed Midi Shorts are the perfect example. The description on the website says it best: Go for bold. From chevron to floral, from the runways to the streets, rarely anything is just a solid color anymore.

There are a limitless variety of ways to wear shorts, especially with recent emerging fashion trends. Often, during the summer months, it’s easy to just throw on a simple tee and flats with your shorts. That classic look is always a great option, but I love taking a generally casual piece and dressing it up to make the outfit something more. I topped off this pair of shorts with a solid black tank and suede cropped blazer for a more streamlined look. Mixing textures is always fun and you definitely can’t go wrong with emerald (Pantone’s Color of the Year!). I also added a few simple accessories, just to give the ensemble a little something extra. If it’s still a little chilly outside, you can easily add a long sleeve top under the blazer and some tights under the shorts.

To complete the outfit, I added a pair of metal cap toe, black flats. Contrasting tips on shoes is a major trend right now and can give any look a bit of sparkle and shine. American Eagle Outfitters has a pair that is very similar, and they’re available in three different colors. Take your pick, Fashionistas!

I love the muted, gray midi shorts, but for those that are looking for something a little brighter, you’re in luck! You can get the same cuffed, patterned shorts with pops of blue and hot pink. This gives you room to have a bit more fun with your accessories and shoes. I’d recommend the AEO Pop Color Oxfords, or even a pair of the Western Heeled Booties. For accessories, you can always add on a bright scarf and fun bracelets or earrings.  My best suggestion, though, is to just have fun with it! Get creative and don’t shy away from print and color this season. “Go for bold!”
