Ever since moving to New York City last August for my first semester of college at the Fashion Institute of Technology, I have been inundated with stylistic inspiration at the turn of every street and avenue. From roaming the cobblestone streets of SoHo and people watching in Chinatown to seeing impeccably dressed crowds in Williamsburg, the city has truly encouraged me to be creative when it comes to personal style.
While the inspiration may never cease to flow, my own creativity does have its slow days, especially when tests, projects and styling take priority. When my world is mildly chaotic and I find myself struggling to put together an outfit, the white T-shirt is my stylistic savior. This simple garment may be a basic piece but its very simplicity is what makes it a fantastic wardrobe essential for my ever-changing style.
I like to believe that my personal style isn’t defined by a single set of words or a specific genre, but rather an amalgamation of different aspects combined into one. My style is influenced by many factors, one of them being the weather. Coming from Southern California, where the temperatures are perpetually warm and pleasant, I am still learning how to align my closet with the colder climate of the east coast. Accordingly, my outfits have become more outerwear-centric, built on well-cut and statement-making coats, jackets, and layering pieces. With a focus on my favorite vest, here is how I styled my favorite white T-shirt:
- Black motorcycle vest: A moto vest has just the right amount of silver hardware, pleather and attitude, making it a great layering piece for any wardrobe.
- Origami pleat skirt: The architecture in the city has definitely caused me to be attracted to more sharply constructed garments. A layered pleat skirt can be paired with both drapey and fitted pieces.
- Mid-heel ankle boots: Able to be dressed both up and down, the right pair of ankle boots can be just as a chic as your sophisticated high heels but easily as comfortable as your walking shoes—perfect for city-trekking.
- Layered necklaces: In an otherwise simple outfit of tailored black and white separates, I added a personal touch with my favorite necklaces. The heaviness of the silver chain and turquoise detail is balanced with the lightness of my semi-sheer white T-shirt.
