CLASS OF 2014: Sheyenne

Exclusive Feature

At the risk of sounding cliché, I’m going to vouch that time really does fly when you’re having fun. It’s hard to believe that just slightly over two years has passed since I first stepped foot on campus after a long, involuntary gap year. From being an enthusiastic fresher— a title which I embraced with full-bodied pride— complete with a geeky backpack and full bangs that even Cleopatra would envy, I am proud to say that the zeal for life and knowledge still burns brightly within me. Now, on the brink of my second year, I am finally seeing hints of the future that awaits for me take form. I can only owe this to all the opportunities and lessons that life has thrown my way.

While it took a long time for me to even get into a university (don’t fool around during your A -levels,  kids!), it didn’t take me as long to realize that it’s not about where you go to university or how prestigious it is. At the end of the day, it is what you choose to take from it, and what you make of your time there that matters the most. Going to the opposite ends of the earth won’t guarantee what you want in life, it’s your attitude that will.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned the hard way recently, it is to seize the chance. When torn between the prospect of doing something you’re not sure you’ll enjoy or staying in your comfort zone, always go for the former. The outcome may not turn out great all the time, but even when it doesn’t, you still come away a lesson smarter and an experience wiser.

My only regret is discovering CollegeFashionista so late during my university experience! I can safely say that if it had entered the picture sooner, the past two years would have been a different story altogether. However, being a part of CollegeFashionista even for just a semester has truly opened up my eyes and polished me to be a better writer in many ways that I never imagined possible.  Through the trials and tribulations of the past semester, my resolve to establish a career in the industry has been strengthened immensely. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy scouring  through shopping websites and reading fashion magazines and blogs as part of “research?” It’s like when you’re in high school and your teacher tells you to watch a movie as part of your homework — score!

I’d like to thank my editor and the wonderful team behind CollegeFashionista for working so hard to give hopeful fashion journalists, like yours truly, their very first taste of the industry, and providing a stepping stone to greater things. If all turns out well in my career, I can safely say CollegeFashionista was at the helm of it all!
