FASHION FROM ABROAD: Bright Tights, Big City

Fashion From Abroad

Being a very simple dresser with a closet composed mostly of solids, I have never been brave enough to try the trend of patterned tights. I never can decide which print I like best and how to style myself in them. I tend to resort to the classic black, which is always a safe bet. But, here in London, patterned tights are being worked by Fashionistas throughout all the streets. From my neighborhood (Islington) to the posh areas of Kensington and Chelsea, everyone manages to show off their choice of print.

I came across this week’s Fashionista while I was leaving the Natural History Museum the other day. A great area for students and wealthy alike, the promenade in front of the museum is an excellent place to look out for the latest and greatest. This young lady was heading into the museum when I had to stop her. She sports one of my favorite prints at the moment, the Union Jack. Being the national flag, it can be found all over England on all sorts of accessories, items and knickknacks. These tights are a fantastic way of bringing together such an awesome print into such a trendy statement piece. It works on a much greater canvas as opposed to small patterns of crosses or flowers that are typically seen. Also being tights as opposed to a heavy coat or handbag, it’s a trend that won’t hurt your budget. They can always be used to dress up or dress down an outfit and are sure to be a conversation starter.

Her matching ability is one that doesn’t go unnoticed as well. With her red lipstick and red satin belt, she accents the colors in the flag subtly but successfully. Contrasting with the black and white, she chooses basic colors that will not overpower the outfit. She keeps the main focus drawn towards the tights. This is easy to incorporate this into your own wardrobe. You can ditch the jacket for a short sleeve and swap the boots for some flats. I might just suggest that back home, you‘ll be better off sporting the American flag opposed to the British!
