I’ve had side swept bangs since my tweenage bible, Seventeen, told me that they are flattering for my face shape. Like many Fashionistas, I got accustomed to the look and decided to grow my bangs back out a few years later. I was in the awkward, are-those-bangs-or-short-layers stage until I finally decided to just cut them again—I never really made it to growing them out completely. During that incredibly weird time I would make a little poof at the crown of my hairline and pin the hairs back with a few too many bobby pins that, despite false advertising, are much more visible than I believed at the time. I’ll always be proud of my Jersey heritage, but seriously, where was this Fashionista’s stylish pinning during my time of need? I thought I was going for a Derek Lam model-esque cool, relaxed vibe, but looking back I clearly was headed more in the direction of a certain reality star who shall not be named.
Today’s Fashionista took a simple but totally innovative approach to pinning bangs back. She simply braided those bang-layer pieces, pinning them back loosely and spritzing with a light hold hairspray. Her flawless blonde and caramel highlights keep her look natural and put together.
Dark polish is always a perfect addition to a chilly day—essie has some intriguingly sinister variations in wicked and devil’s advocate. For an even more luxurious effect, try a sparkly topcoat over your favorite winter base color. Even more important than an awesome nail polish is keeping your skin resistant to the brutal winter winds that suck out all of the moisture. A favorite childhood trick of mine is smothering your hands in Vaseline and putting socks over them before bedtime. By the morning, you won’t have any more cracking fingers or scaly palms. Throw a mini lotion into your everyday bag to ward off any midday dryness.
An extensive beauty routine in the dropping temperatures isn’t necessary to stand out. Using simple steps, like changing up your bangs or using a bold polish, is really the best way to effortlessly keep up a chic beauty routine.
