FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Heather Anderson

Fashionista Spotlight

An important tip that all Fashionistas need to remember while dressing for school is that you shouldn’t want to look over done. The last thing you want to do is look like you tried too hard to come up with an outfit because realistically you will be wearing that outfit to sit in a classroom. The main purpose of attending school is to learn something and when dressing for school, as a true Fashionista/o, your campus style should appear to be effortless and cool. The Fashionista above is a perfect example of what effortless and cool is supposed to look like.

While keeping it stylish and simple, she pairs denim cut-off shorts with a minimalistic black American Apparel satin blouse. Now, what makes the outfit “cool” is her Steve Madden boots, Marc by Marc Jacobs hobo bag, cat-eye sunnies, and the assortment of bracelets she wears with various silver rings. This all goes to show that sometimes, what makes an outfit stylish are the accessories worn with it.

Name: Heather Anderson

Campus: Humber College

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: Where do you find your fashion inspiration?

Heather Anderson: I get my inspiration from my mood. Whatever I am going to wear really is dependent on how I am feeling that day. However my mood can be inspired from movies I watch, poems I read or themed runway shows. With this outfit I am inspired by the effortlessly cool look that models have off duty. I'm usually dressed more whimsically but sometimes you throw on an outfit and go to where you need to go.

CF: Who is your favorite designer and why?

HA: My favorite designer is Vivienne Westwood. She is the epitome of punk rock. She has this floaty way about her attitude and it is totally reflected in her designs. Her shows always have these wild party girls who don't care about what anyone else thinks and who don't care if their hair is in the right place. Her vibe is very funky and punky and I love that.

CF: What are 3 key items you cannot live without?

HA: I don't think I could live without a pair of lace up boots. I wear boots almost every day of the year. I also couldn't live without my Aveeno face wash (after a long night), or my Marc by Marc Jacobs Hobo bag. We have a love/hate relationship because it holds everything (and has a long and short strap), but can get very heavy… I guess that’s what happens when you wear your life on one shoulder.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

HA: I would describe my personal style as funky. I enjoy juxtaposition and I love having one thing that throws off an outfit. Anything too matchy is boring for me.

How To: Here are another few tips on appearing effortlessly stylish. First, you should wear one anchor piece that ties everything in together and sets the whole vibe for your look. In the above photo, this Fashionista’s Steve Madden boots are the anchor piece. I say this because, if she had been wearing sandals instead, her outfit wouldn’t have given off that element of coolness. Shoes and accessories can go a long way when making your outfit your own. I find that the most unique accessories are usually found in places like markets and random boutiques. Note to females: another great way to add some personality to a simple outfit is to wear a bold statement lip. This Fashionista knows the power of a statement lip as she wears bright pink lipstick to add that eye-catching element to her look.
