Growing up in a small country town in western Pennsylvania, fashion wasn’t something that was exactly common in everyday life. However, I managed to find a bit of an escape by way of my Vogue archive and developed a fondness for fashion early on.
When people would ask me just why I loved fashion so much, I would be at a loss for words and give them that kind of look that said, “Why wouldn’t I love fashion so much? Why doesn’t everyone love fashion so much?!” Some kids liked math. Some kids liked science. I liked staying awake until midnight on school nights to see the most recent runway collections go up on style.com during the Fashion Weeks. (Between you and me, I also liked writing my own reviews of them while pretending I was a major fashion editor).
My fascination with the fashion industry was an intrinsic part of me, and fashion became, for lack of a better word, my thing.
Ever since I realized how important fashion really was to me, I have decided to use my own wardrobe as my creative outlet. I wanted to make sure that every outfit I wore was something that a) I loved, b) I was truly comfortable in and c) accurately represented me as a person. In high school, I could spend as long as an hour trying on different looks to wear for the next day, and I didn’t do this to win “Best Dressed” my senior year, or to become “That Girl Who Never Repeats Outfits.” I did it because I genuinely enjoyed playing with all the different combinations I could make with my clothes and accessories. This was to me what a sport is to a dedicated athlete. At the start of 2012, I even challenged myself to go an entire year without repeating an outfit and documented the whole thing here.
When that notorious, what-do-I-want-to-do-for-the-rest-of-my-life point came toward the end of high school, I knew that I would not be happy working anywhere other than the fashion industry. I was, and still am, confident that this is the right career path for me, which is why I am a freshman Fashion Merchandising major at Kent State University.
While I do pay particular attention to my own personal style, I’m also fascinated by the styles of those around me. I am so grateful and excited to be a part of the CollegeFashionista team this semester, as it will not only allow me to gain experience and build a solid foundation for my future career, but it’ll also allow me to experience college on a whole new level as I observe the daily looks of my peers.
