Style Guru Bio: Caroline Mills

Style Guru Bio

My name is Caroline Mills, and I am a recent graduate from Vassar College where I majored in Media Studies and enjoyed the pleasures of a liberal arts education and the company of amazingly intelligent, creative and stylish peers. This is my second semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista, and I am delighted that I can take the experience with me as I move on to my post-graduate life. I look forward to being able to take my natural eye for fashion combined with the experience that CollegeFashionista has given me beyond the stonewalls of Vassar’s campus to the streets of New York City where I grew up.

My love of fashion has been with me ever since I tried on my first Chanel suit and Issey Miyake skirt when I was just a bitty thing playing dress up in my mother’s closet, which I still do to this day. While my career aspirations have changed from fashion designer, to magazine editor, to owning a successful blog and boutique of my own, my deep appreciation and love for fashion has never waned. While of course I follow trends like everyone else, I like to think I have a personal style that is uniquely my own. I grew up in Manhattan but now live in Brooklyn, and I think that my personality and style is an equal blend of the two boroughs. My style is girly and sophisticated but is also laidback and a little rough around the edges. While I love fashion designers like Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Marni, Lanvin, Proenza Schouler, Prada and Givenchy, I would rather dig through piles of clothes at thrift stores and flea markets than shop along Fifth Avenue.

As I move into the “real world” and embark on the journey that is life after college, I will be interning with one of my favorite stores, Pixie Market, and enjoying the excitement of life in New York. In the past I have interned at Spin magazine, Interview Magazine and The New York Times Style Magazine, all of which have helped me gain a great sense of style, a strong work ethic and reach my full creative potential. I believe these internships, as well as my love of fashion and my great appreciation for all the different and unique senses of style that decorate the streets of New York, make me a more than capable style guide. Above all, fashion is a form of personal expression and as a Style Guru, I aim to highlight the many different Fashionistas/os that give life to the city I love and make New York City the colorful and exciting place that it is.
