FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Laura Anderson

Fashionista Spotlight

Fall is the most confusing of all seasons in Minnesota. With its crazy unpredictable weather patterns one minute we’re zipped up in our parkas, the next we’re sporting our favorite T-shirts walking to class, and then all of a sudden we’re splashing around campus in our rain boots. There’s no question the weather here definitely forces us to pay attention to our fashion choices. We must be temperature friendly and ultra-trendy all at the same time! This week’s Fashionista shows us how to dress appropriately for a warm, fall day, no jacket or mittens necessary.

Name: Laura Anderson

Major: Psychology

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: I love your simple look today, tell me about it!

Laura Anderson: It’s a beautiful day today so I decided to skip my jacket and just wear a basic cardigan to class. I paired the colored cardigan with my striped dress that I love because it’s print is unique and geometric. Then I just wore my leggings and tall riding boots.

CF: I love the neckline of your dress, where did you get it?

LA: If I’m remembering right, I ordered it online from Nordstrom.

CF: How do you accessorize with such a busy print?

LA: You’re right, the print is really loud, it’s definitely the center of my outfit. So my rule of thumb is to just focus on that and go basic with your accessories. My simple necklace with turquoise embellishment is the only thing I needed, along with my basic, black shades for when I’m outside.

CF: Horizontal or vertical stripes? I notice your outfit incorporates both?

LA: It depends on your body type for sure. I definitely think it’s true that vertical stripes make you look thinner, but it’s fun to mix it up a bit. If you can find pieces like my dress that have both, that’s always fun.

CF: What’s your take on the stripes and dots trend? Do you like to mix your prints ever or do you stick with your classic striped look?

LA: I definitely always stick with one print, especially if I’m wearing stripes. It’s such a strange pattern that can easily look bad on certain body types, so don’t push it. Wear your stripes with bold colors that’s fine, but never another print. It’s too much.

CF: Is there any other trends that you’re just obsessed with this season?

LA: I’m super into the equestrian look. I know it’s been popular for awhile now, but the look is so basic yet elegant, I love it!

How To: Stripes are an essential part to your closet no matter what the season. In the summer you always need to showcase a fair share of nautical blue and white stripes, and in the winter it never hurts to wear a little white and red candy cane stripes. For now, stick with the fall colors that look best on you. A trendy sweater with olive and oatmeal stripes is perfect, or if you’re extra bold try a striped pant and you’re sure to stand out in a crowd. This trend is what you make it, it can be casual or dashing, bright or subdued, classic or uniqueall you have to do is decide who you want be that day.
