Pulling off the retro look can be difficult, especially here in suburban Minnesota where everything’s by the book. This week’s Fashionista shows us how to step out of your element and showcase this boyish trend without the extra grunge. In her boyfriend button-down she utilizes the acid wash trend in a more modern way. Underneath she paired a vintage-esque skull T-shirt with multi-color detailing with slimming black jeggings — an ideal offset to the baggy shirt. She accessorized with red TOMS and a bold statement necklace perfectly contrasting the bright colors in her shirt.

CollegeFashionista: Your look is so different than the styles we see around here, what makes you take fashion risks like these?
Emily Robison: Well I love doing just that, breaking away from the norm. I don’t want to look like everyone else. Fashion runs in my family, so back home we always wear the latest trends.
CF: I like how you pulled off the acid wash style today, what’s your favorite trend from decades past?
ER: Omg, if I could live in the sixties, I’d be the happiest girl ever. I love the bell-bottom jeans and peace signs everywhere!
CF: Nice! Back to today, what trend are you looking most forward to this fall?
ER: Well despite my outfit choice today, I usually love ultra feminine looks. I absolutely loved the new take on winter white at New York Fashion Week. It’s such an elegant color but designers this year are making it so much more laid back and easier to wear everyday.
CF: You know your stuff, I’m impressed! Who’s your favorite designer right now?
ER: I love Derek Lam, he’s the one I’m talking about with the winter white trend, his collection is beautiful!
How To: This Fashionista’s look is perfect for all people who love putting a modern day twist on an old trend. Let’s point out the obvious, the color of this trend is black. Go into your closet and look for black everything: leather jackets, vests and skinny jeans. The key ingredient to any rocker look is a graphic shirt, preferably showcasing a cool band or musician. Accessorize in moderation with this look because your outfit is already making a bold statement. If you’re daring enough, test-drive this rough and tough trend!
