There's nothing more classic and universal than black on black and it’s great for keeping warm on these cool fall days. This week’s Fashionista shows us how to pull off this trend whether you’re dressed for your final speech in class or just a regular day on campus. With a simple pop of color in one central accessory like her scarf, this Fashionista is simple and chic. Let’s hear her advice to achieve this “black” to school trend.
Name: Audrey Griffin
Major: Design
Year: Junior
CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit, what trend are you showcasing?
Audrey Griffin: Well, I was just going with the basic black on black today. I felt with all black pieces, I could wear a fun scarf and colored lipstick. It’s a simple, timeless trend that's always in style and appropriate for any occasion.
CF: Where did you get some of the pieces you’re wearing?
AG: The boots are Frye from Nordstrom, the cardigan is from Gap and I got my scarf on sale at Target.
CF: What’s the best advice you can give to someone who wants to pull of this classic trend?
AG: I think because it’s such an ageless look that you can wear a lot, it’s important to invest in good quality pieces. Something like a basic black cardigan or black equestrian boots will always be in style, so don’t be afraid to spend a little more money than you would on something that’s just in-the-moment.
CF: How should Fashionistas do their makeup if they want this look?
AG: Well that depends on what you’re doing at the time. Like today I was just going to class, so I went with simple, neutral makeup and nude lipstick. If you’re going out at night, a bright red lip color always goes with black on black outfits!
CF: If you wanted to wear this look for a night out, what would you change?
AG: I would definitely change my cardigan to a black leather jacket or maybe a vest with a long sleeve underneath. Next, I would swap my scarf for a chunky necklace and maybe put my hair into a teased high ponytail.
How To: To achieve this black on black look is amazingly simple. The key, like this Fashionista said, is to invest in good quality pieces that will last you a long time. A black pair of leather equestrian boots are great for this trend and many others as well as a classic black cardigan. Make sure you have at least one central accessory that contrasts your black on black, whether it’s a scarf or bold ring. With these simple rules, you can be chic and classy for school or any occasion with this timeless style.
