STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Flannel Fever

Style Advice of the Week

Since grunge kids in the ’90s made it their unofficial uniform, plaid has been a fashion staple for the young and hip. It seems almost surreal to realize that most of the Fashionistas/os were barely out of diapers when Kurt Cobain was wearing his plaid shirt over grungy thermal shirts and Alanis Morissette was tying hers around her waist. And who can forget when Tai from Clueless traded her flannel version for a chic little plaid miniskirt?

More recently, the trend has made a comeback within “hipster” culture and has become more of a closet staple than ever before! No longer an affectation of younger generations, everyone seems to own at least one plaid item. It’s no wonder that plaid is so prevalent; they can be chic with a high-waisted skirt and they can be casual with jeans. Even the runways have been taking notice; Michael Kors’ fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection and Marni’s pre-fall 2012 collections are full of plaid looks.

To stand out in a sea of black and gray sweaters (and to keep warm while doing it!), take a tip from this Fashionista and don an adorable plaid shirt of your own! For an unexpected look, try this version with chambray details to knock out two trends at once. For your more classic ’90s style, Urban Outfitters makes a well-worn, soft version that keeps you feeling incredibly warm and comfortable in the winter weather. J.Crew offers a breezy cotton option that feels more preppy, if that’s more your style. To transition to the warmer summer months, take a cue from Dries Van Notten’s spring/summer 2013 campaign, and try a sheer blouse in a plaid print. The look will be fantastic now with jeans and boots, and will look equally cute with a pair of high-waisted shorts later on!
