STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Belted Outerwear

Style Advice of the Week

There’s a reason designers—season after season—continue to add belts to the waists of dresses, blouses and every other item of clothing you can imagine. The waist is usually the smallest part of a woman’s figure, and a cinched in waist emphasizes that natural asset. Even if you don’t naturally have an hourglass figure or need to hide a few extra pounds in the stomach area (the holidays were hard on all of our figures), a belted waist will slim down your overall appearance. It may sound counterintuitive, but this trend can actually make a larger waist seem smaller. And a small waist will not come at the expense of your other problem areas, it will make your entire body look slimmer overall.

I spotted this Fashionista at Reckers on campus wearing the most fabulous belted wool coat I have ever seen. In a sea of matching down-filled parkas, she immediately stood out with her figure-flattering outerwear. And if the cut wasn’t enough to make this coat completely drool-worthy, the color is fantastic. Camel is really the ultimate neutral; it looks equally wonderful with navy, darker brown, and black. For a similar look, try this camel Calvin Klein creation. If you want to invest in a more luxe version, a classic Burberry coat would be a wardrobe staple for years to come.

While the weather outside has recently been reminiscent of the arctic tundra, the end of winter is actually approaching. Since our wool coats will be packed away in two months, you may not want to invest in a heavy coat this late in the season. However, a great trench coat is cut the same way as this Fashionista’s wool version but more appropriate for spring and fall. Underneath, try to keep if classic and casual with a great tunic-inspired sweater (try black-and-white stripes for something both timeless and seriously on-trend) and a basic pair of black leggings. My favorite pair is from Anthropologie – the fleece-lined version keeps your legs super warm and the price is unbeatable. Finish off your look with your favorite pair of equestrian boots, and you’re ready to rock this winter weather!
