STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: An Ode To The ’90s

Style Advice of the Week

Rollin with the homies…” is a tune most famously known by Tai and Elton, who sang it after Tai was hit in the head with a shoe at a party in ‘the valley.’ In fact, Coolio owes most of his song’s success and remembrance to the film, Clueless. Clueless is a classic because of its fashion and timeless comedy. But, it will forever remain as the reigning film of the ’90s. Curt Cobain, the front man of Nirvana, introduced the public to grunge music, and of course the fashion. Plaid flannels and combat boots are a simple nod to the early ’90s era.

We can’t forget the singer Aaliyah, who showcased how women in urban culture were dressing during this time; baggy pants and crop tops were a few of the many styles worn during this time. If you haven’t noticed, every item mentioned above has been revived in the fashion world over the last couple years. We now see the return of some of these trends on the runways of Vivienne Tam and Rihanna for River Island. When I saw this Fashionista, she reminded me of each of these ’90s characters and illustrated what is being brought back in 2013.

Her pants with the oriental floral print and slouchy fit is a clear acknowledgement of the beloved era. The print modernizes the pant, and she paired it with mid-calf sneaker wedges. She pulled back from over accentuating her look and added a simple white top and black cardigan to the mix. She finished her look with the ever-so-trendy beanie. Getting a look like this Fashionista is simple and it only takes a few pieces to replicate it.

Begin by selecting a printed dropped-crouch pant. Try these printed joggers from Topshop. Or get inspired by Vivenne Westwood’s Anglomania trouser. For a similar shoe, cop these Ash wedge sneakers or even Steve Madden’s version of the Isabel Marants. Now that beanies are a wardrobe essential, ASOS as an awesome boyfriend-inspired beanie that will effortlessly add some ‘street credibility’ to your outfit. And always remember that heritage is a big part of fashion, so don’t lose yours.
