FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Emma Kurten

Fashionista Spotlight

When I spotted this visiting Fashionista, I immediately fell in LOVE with her boots. Every girl has a pair or two of boots for fall and winter, but I'd never seen a pair like these before, and I was obsessed. I loved the textures happening in her outfit, and I think she is really showing how you don't need a lot of color to make an outfit interesting. The knit of her infinity scarf is oversized and chunky, and along with the woven boots, this Fashionista is making comfy look chic.

Name: Emma Kurten

Major: Journalism and Women and Gender Studies

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: What are some must-haves in your wardrobe for fall and winter?

Emma Kurten: I love boots, sweaters and socks. I think that “cozy” can be a great style, and I hate people who say that you have to sacrifice comfort for style. I mean, I'm in college.

CF:  What is your favorite way to style tall riding boots?

EK:  I usually wear them with jeans or leggings, and sometimes with skirts. For fall, I think it's so cute to have a bright or patterned knee-high sock peeking out the top.

CF: What stores do you find your favorite knit-wear at?

EK:  I really like J.Crew and Gap for scarves and sweaters, but I wear so many old sweaters that I find in my attic, and second hand stores have great old knit sweaters too. I also love to knit, and make a lot of scarves for myself.

How to:  To recreate this look, start with a thick pair of black leggings. Though some may argue this, I believe that, when styled appropriately, a quality pair of leggings can pass for pants. Next, get a comfortable cardigan or zip up. These pieces will create the comfortable base of the outfit (which everyone is looking for!), and then you can use accessories such as playful rings and chunky scarves to amp up the style. Lastly, look for a pair of super unique boots.  Every girl has a classic pair, but a great pair of one-of-a-kind boots is totally underrated and can make such a statement. This Fashionista got hers at Anthropologie, so I decided to check their boot selection out this season, they're a little pricey but I found this FANTASTIC pair that are slightly reminiscent of this Fashionistas look. I can't say it enough- stray from basic “basics”—it's the most unexpected way to individualize your look.
