BEAUTY BAR: Downtown Drama

The origin of our passions often comes from some of the most interesting moments we experience. When this Fashionista was little, her mother would not let her wear makeup in public until she was a freshman in high school. So while her family was asleep, she spent hours mimicking the looks of Lady Gaga and Kesha using only her mother’s cobalt eyeliner. What started as a secret act of defiance has blossomed into a passion for this Fashionista, who enjoys spreading the love of makeup and treating it as the art form it is.

Sweltering summer heat in the city is one of makeup’s largest opponents, and Pennsylvania’s obnoxious humidity always creates an unwanted amount of shininess on the face that only well-applied foundation and powder can downplay. If you’re going to splurge on any makeup product, foundation is one that this Fashionista encourages you to spend a few extra bucks on.

Professional-quality makeup looks come naturally to this Fashionista, but she admits this wasn’t always the case. The process of finding the look that suits your facial features best takes practice and the confidence to try bold techniques. When trying out new makeup looks, it’s good to step out of your comfort zone by putting a little bit more black on your eyes than you ever thought you would.

This Fashionista believes that wearing makeup isn’t solely a way to conceal imperfections, it is a way of expressing yourself, just like clothing. She also abides by the “when you look good, you feel good” motto. Wearing makeup makes you think less about your appearance. If you know in the back of your mind that you look good, you’re not always going to be checking your face in the mirror. But if you feel ugly and you feel like there are flaws, you will constantly look to see if they’re still there. So it’s actually a really healthy thing to put in the effort to feel good, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not false.

What’s on the BEAUTY BAR: Highlighter is so important. It makes you look alive and shiny and shimmery like a goddess. Why would you not want that? You’ll also need a brow kit to obtain a fierce eyebrow shape that follows your natural brow line. A solid foundation and primer duo is necessary for the look to withstand the summer heat. Your eyes will need a swipe of eyeliner and shimmery eye shadow in neutral colors. Finish the look off with a lip color that resembles your natural color and leaves all the attention for the eyes.
