Hi! My name is Sarah Wasilak and I’ve been writing for CollegeFashionista for seven semesters. While you’d think I would have some pretty adamant opinions about which column is the best or which season yields superior photos, I don’t. I have fun each and every semester – from attending fashion panels and pop-up shops to working with brand campaigns and writing my weekly reports – this entire internship has been so rewarding.
I’ve developed ideas about style that evolve and expand with every post that I write. Recently, I’ve been interested in the way fashion repeats itself. There are certain cuts and silhouettes so major that everyone knows they’ll resurface again, and it’s so fun to track the cycle – especially on a college campus where students are interpreting trends in their own, unique ways.
As a NYU Style Guru, I keep my eyes peeled for the sartorially smart every time I walk down the street. I love finding a Fashionista who’s just as excited about what she’s wearing as I am, then again, it’s always fun to capture a girl or guy that looks great and doesn’t even know it. Whichever the case, I always try to spot the outfits that CF readers will draw the utmost inspiration from. As a Style Guru, I have the power to choose which students I want to take photos of, and in that way, I’m defining fashion.
My own taste is pretty eclectic. Right now I’m loving the look of a simple, athletic gray sweatshirt over a more ornate skirt – it’s casual meets classy chic and so easy to put together. I’m also really into flats (brogues, chelsea boots and Converse) and high waisted denim, whereas last year at this time I was all about my wedge booties and skater dresses. But based on the ever-revolving style cycle, I’m sure I’ll be pulling out my platforms again soon.
Regardless of my latest craze, there are stores I’ll never leave empty-handed: Beacon’s Closet, Cure, H&M and Urban Outfitters are my go-to shopping spots. But my new favorite gem is LOFT because it’s perfect for stocking up on embellished trousers and cardigans. Aside from CollegeFashionista, I’ve interned at Cosmopolitan, NYLON and I’ll be starting in the editorial department at Refinery29 this January. I’d love to work for a magazine or fashion site one day, and being a CF Style Guru is great practice. Updating my weekly column here has become habitual. It’s something I can’t wait to do. In other words, CollegeFashionista is my obsession.
