FASHION NEWS: Mad for Wonderland

It would be so nice if something made sense for a change – Alice in Wonderland

With the impending release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland coming sooner than I can reasonably imagine, the fashion world is bracing themselves and getting ahead of the game by releasing Alice inspired merchandise now. Nail polish brand O.P.I. is releasing a line of bright and sparkly colors inspired by the film. Tim Binn’s coming out with a line based on the new movie, which has been reported to cost more than I can fathom. But, if you are like me and can’t drop a grand or more on jewelry, try a graphic tee. Palmer Cash has a great option that is sure to put you into a mad and merry mood. Instead of just eagerly awaiting the arrival of Alice in Wonderland, go out and get prepared for the film and grab some Alice garb; anything else would just simply be mad.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Stylin’ Out Sports Style

“I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.” – Jay-Z

The NFL playoffs are in full effect, which means the end to the NFL season (my bet is on the Colts taking the title this year), but that doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing sports gear! This Fashionisto is still rocking the classic and timeless New York Yankees hat and baseball has been over since the Yankees took the World Series. Or, you could take another cue and match your shoelaces with the colors of your favorite team. This sports lover used the red and white laces for the Portland Trailblazers. But, of course, being Ducks, every one has to have a Ducks sweatshirt in their closet. In the morning when you have those pesky and annoying 8 a.m. classes it is the best thing to grab and throw on as you run out the door. Whatever you do, be sure and support your team and, as always, the Ducks!!!

FASHION NEWS: Twitterpatted with Fashion Technology

“The iPod completely changed the way people approach music.” – Karl Lagerfeld

As technology is rapidly changing, so is the fashion industry to keep up with the technological trends. Karl Lagerfeld, who has been amazing at this evolution, has kept Chanel up-to-date through podcasts and Facebook. Many companies and designers are now taking to the web, and getting more involved with the technological advances. So, in order to celebrate and become aware of all the outlets for fashion, here is a short list of some of the ways to stay fashionable informed.

  • Currently on iTunes there are  numerous video podcasts from Chanel, Style.com, ModTV, H&M, and WhoWhatWear. Each one is free and full of fabulous fashion. There are many other companies, so pop open that iTunes and get browsing.
  • Twitter, my 140-character love, is packed with fashion. It seems as if every major fashion magazine and website has a Twitter account, including your very own College Fashionista (@CFashionista). Once you start searching the fashion industry on Twitter, the rabbit-hole is very easy to fall into.
  • Who doesn’t love killing time on Facebook? Well, while you are reading through statuses of friends and family, check out some designer pages, including Diane von Furstenberg, Chanel, and Tiffany and Co. Many designers continually update their pages, keeping you in the loop.
  • The good ‘ol website. Numerous magazines have taken to posting many of their stories online and allow full access to most every aspect of the site. I don’t know about you, but my toolbar is packed with links to sites. As a bonus, many writers have their own blogs on fashion.
  • Newsletters are a great way for daily updates. Rachel Zoe has recently come out with her own newsletter talking about her favorite trends and also includes a less expensive substitute, which is awesome.

Keeping informed and educated is always sexy and stylish, so stay in the loop, Fashionistas. Get your fashion fix through the ever-evolving technology world.

Simple and Sweet This Season

Seasons greetings my fashion loving friends,

My favorite Christmas song (sung by Judy Garland) is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” which says,

Have yourself a merry little Christmas. May your heart be light. From now on, our troubles will be out of sight… Through the years we all will be together. If the fates allow, until then, we’ll have to muddle through some how. So, have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Whether or not you celebrate Christmas is irrelevant to the moral that is this season that is supposed to be full of good cheer, let’s let go of all our worries and try to re-connect with loved ones who we have been away from. Let’s celebrate the season, but of course, lets keep things chic and stylish. This Fashionista is rocking a look that would be perfect for a family gathering or a festive party. A great, fitted dress, paired with one of my favorites – warm tights and a chic scarf is a wonderful look. Add a heeled boot for a night out. Not only will you look effortlessly chic, but you’ll also be warm and beautiful. Another way to dress up this very functional look is to accessorize with a detailed clutch or a chunky bracelet. So, fashion fellows, I hope your season is warm and bright, that you make the best of this season and spend time with family and friends. All my seasonal best to all.

FASHION NEWS: Pre-Fall 2010 Proves Fantastic

“Attitude is everything.”  – Diane von Furstenberg

As most of us are bundled in our coats and hats preparing for the holidays and to enjoy winter break, designers are adorning models with their Pre-Fall 2010 looks. A trend that seems to be popular amongst designers is a move towards clean lines and a simplistic, formed enhancing, fit. While, there are exceptions to this and every designer interprets this differently, there are definitely many pieces that can be work straight from the runway to campus and would be absolutely fabulous. As we Ducks know, Eugene gets to be very rainy and the need for a trench is almost a necessity and Michael Kors debuted a beautiful short trench paired with a heels that my feet are dying to be in. Zac Posen had many great dresses, but one that stuck out to me was the lovely red, a-lined dress that would be perfect for a holiday party, a fall back-to school look, or a spring party. It’s shape is perfect for almost and body type and it’s color youthful and energetic. Chanel’s show had many Asian under-tones and many great pieces. Chanel showed a black jacket with black, designed, tight pants and heels that is a edgy look and accessible to many. The pieces could be worn together, as shown, or as separates. Either way, the look would be fabulous. Of course, the key to any successful look is attitude and fit, which are key, not only to fashion, but to life. And, finally, a dress that I would love to add to my wardrobe and wear out is from Diane von Furstenberg. The dress is a short, dark colored, frilly-bottomed, amazing party dress and accompanied by a blazer. This piece is one of my favorites. Despite the fact that I love blazers and think everyone should own a well tailored blazer, the dress is a knockout and so fun. My advice to you, Fashionistas, is to check out all the designers new, Pre-Fall collections and find some pieces that you can adapt into your wardrobe. While many of us can’t afford these designer duds, we can all afford to spend a little time finding the perfect fit and using these models as inspirations.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Bad Holiday Sweaters No Longer, Fashionistas

Hey there Fashionistas -

Besides the array of Fashion Weeks and baseball season, the holidays are my favorite time of the year. I love getting dressed up for parties, dinners, a New Years Eve kiss and everything else. But let’s face it, we spend more time in casual clothes than dressed up. That’s where a fun, seasonal sweater comes in. No, I am not talking about your Grandpa’s light-up reindeer sweater from 1984, or the sweater your crazy aunt made you last year; I’m talking about a seasonal, savvy sweater. While this may not be a practical item to wear on the road trip to Pasadena to see the Ducks play in the Rose Bowl, it will certainly work if you are staying in Oregon or if your hometown is in a colder part of the country. This Fashionista paired her’s with skinny jeans, but you can also match your sweater with a great trouser jean or cute, festive skirt. Whichever way you choose, go out there and make the season great with a winter favorite.

FASHION NEWS: Move Over Material Girl, Vuitton Springs for Stone

“Some boys kiss me some boys hug me, I think they’re okay. If they don’t give me proper credit

I’ll just walk away…’Cause the boy with the cold-hard cash is always Mr. Right.” – Madonna

I never thought I would see the day when I was happy that Madonna wasn’t going to be part of something any more (Besides dating Yankee 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez; they weren’t good together, he is much better with Kate, his batting record proves it.) But, Louis Vuitton has decided to drop the Material Girl as for its Spring ad campaign and go for soon-to-be superstar Lara Stone. This is a change I can get behind. It wasn’t that there was anything wrong with Madonna being the face of the line (and I love Madonna), but the ads never popped to me or really impressed me. A good ad should make me want to be that person and to want the product they are selling, those ads just made me wish I was as flexible at 20 as Madonna is at 50; actually, even being half as flexible would be fine with me. The change to Lara Stone will be a nice change for the line and I am glad to see them going with a model as opposed to a celebrity (their Keith Richards (I love him as well) ads continue to perplex me.) One of hhe new ads that will be debuting features Stone lying in grass and, I must say, it is quite appealing. According to WWD, “After two seasons with such a huge star, [artistic director] Marc [Jacobs] decided to take a breather and work with a model — and not just any model. It’s the choice of a new supermodel,” said Antoine Arnault, Vuitton’s communication director.” I applaud Mr. Jacob’s and look forward to seeing this new campaign soon.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: I Love My Ducks!

As I am writing this, I know my mind should be consumed with finals week, getting plenty of rest and the upcoming holiday season. But it’s not. All I can think about is how much I want my Ducks to win the Civil War game, beat Oregon State, and go onto California for the Rose Bowl to beat Ohio State. I’m sure most everyone here in Eugene has seen or heard Supwitchugirl’s song “I Love My Ducks”. I think it really captures my mindset right now. If there is ever a time to go all out and bust out the best of the best UO gear, now is the time. The Duck Store is the one-stop shop for all the UO gear you could imagine. You can also go with two very popular trends and sport a yellow or green hoodie with the ever-so-popular UGG boots, like these Fashionistas. But to truly show your love of Duck football, who wouldn’t want to watch the game out of heart-shaped lenses? Nothing says “I love my Ducks,” like hearts in  green and yellow. So, Fashionistas and Fashionistos, before we start heading back to our hometowns for the holidays, go big on the Duck gear. It may not be in Vogue, but it is always in style at the University of Oregon. Quack! Quack!
