Spring waits just around the corner and along with it comes prints and florals (I know, groundbreaking!). Mixing things up a bit can give an outfit the unexpected twist that it needs. Pairing patterns that you normally would not picture together is risky business, but with the right eye, can end in a trendy outfit with a lot of personality.

CollegeFashionista: You have a nice mix of prints in your outfit, how do you decide what patterns will go well together and what would be a mistake?
Kelsey Lichtsinn: Well I don’t wear normal, human clothes often because of work, so the rest of my wardrobe is kind of random pieces that I have to work with. I like finding things that aren’t too extremely different but make each other pop.
CF: Are you excited for any trends that will be happening this spring?
KL: Shorts and heels. Summer heels are my favorite.
CF: Any tips on transitioning your wardrobe to warmer weather?
KL: Go big or go home. As soon as it hits fifty, shorts. If you live in Indiana, you can relate.
CF: If you had a bottomless wallet, what’s the first thing you would buy?
KL: A black pair of Jimmy Choo heels.
How To: The art of the mixed print is a tricky one, so proceed with caution. However, once you get the hang of things the possibilities are endless. Start out by picking your favorite print from your wardrobe, lets say these batik printed palazzo pants. It’s always a good idea to match a crazy print like this one with something more simple and basic. Try tucking in a striped shirt. The outfit is already drastic enough with the clashing prints, so don’t go over the top with outrageous colors–stay in the same color family or go neutral. Make sure you don’t overload your outfit with many accessories, make them chunky and choose either neutral shades or colors pulled from the prints. Throw on some neutral heels to finish off the look. The most important part about this outfit is confidence. If you are not sure of yourself when wearing an outfit outside of the norm, then it is probably a good idea to skip it. But if you have the guts, strut your stuff.
