Fashion is known for repeating itself constantly and the 80’s influence is not coming to a halt anytime soon. In this decade, every Fashionista mimicked the eye-catching style of Madonna and every Fashionisto aspired to dress like Michael Jackson. Even though our role models have changed, the influence of these iconic celebrities has not. As I spotted this Fashionista, I suddenly became nostalgic for oversized t-shirts, tight spandex, and gaudy accessories. I thought of everything that represented the oh-so addicting movies of the decade like Pretty in Pink and Flashdance.
This Fashionista chose a slightly-off-the-shoulder top with a pair of (dare I say it) spandex hot pants (I must admit I own a pair of these). Deciding to pair a bolder striped top with the spandex short allows for maximum emphasis on the top and stops the outfit from going too far into the 80’s. To finish off her simple yet reminiscent look, this Fashionista piled on a ton of gold toned accessories. From her pretzel embellished necklace to her cut-out handbag, she really embraced the gaudy jewelry from the 80’s. Although she is wearing some iconic pieces, this outfit does not scream "overboard" but still is Madonna-esque.
So the next time you're heading to a summer barbecue, mix up your wardrobe by using fashion from previous influential decades. Just remember, do not go overboard (you don't want to seem like you're wearing a costume) and make sure it is event appropriate.
Hint: DIY! To get this Fashionista’s outfit on a budget, grab an old t-shirt out of your closet. Cut the neckline off the shirt allowing it to fall off the shoulder and pair it with your own pair of spandex shorts or a pair of neon cotton shorts. Next, try ostentatious accessories like this gold metal cuff or this rhinestone encrusted ring.
