AROUND TOWN: Tori Rendine

It is a common misconception that to work in the fashion industry, one must go to college in New York City or Los Angeles and graduate with a specific degree such as “Fashion Merchandising.” It is an even more common misconception that a career in fashion is limited to modeling, designing or merchandising. This is not the case. There are numerous careers in the industry such as fashion public relations, buying, visual merchandising and even managing a store that don’t necessarily require a fashion-related degree. To prove that Fashionistas and future fashion professionals exist outside of big cities, I interviewed Tori Rendine, a senior at Roger Williams University majoring in Legal Studies and Psychology who strives to one day be employed as a Fashion Buyer. This passionate Fashionista may not be majoring in fashion, but she definitely has the style and the drive to succeed.

Name: Tori Rendine

Role: Aspiring fashion industry professional

College Fashionista: What are your professional aspirations following your upcoming college graduation?

Tori Rendine: Ideally, I  would like to work in corporate for a high-end designer. I would love to be a buyer because you get to choose between a variety of clothing that works well for your client.

CF: What is your favorite thing about fashion?

TR: I love that I can be whoever I want on different days. Some days I like to be preppy, and other days I’m really into bohemian style and looking like a hippie. There’s a lot of versatility depending on how I feel.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

TR: I’m definitely really trendy. I like constantly changing things up and keeping up with what’s “in.”

Learn More: Fashion buyers work in environments from small retail stores to large firms. Tori will be graduating this coming May, so look out for her entrance into the world of fashion. To channel your own trendy, bohemian style like this Fashionista, pick up pieces such as a flowing patterned blouse, choker and a variety of dainty rings. Remember, opt for less expensive trendy items to allow yourself to try out different things and don’t be afraid to invest more on classic pieces.
