Since the combination of blogger-turned-designer has never seemed to fail in the fashion industry, Sonia Kumar may have her grasp on an exclusive spot in a new wave of young designers. A college student with an eye for prep with an edge, Sonia has been exploring and discovering her aesthetic since childhood. If only to prove her long-standing attention to the industry and it’s most consistent artists, a wide range of design houses inspire Sonia’s designs. From René Lacoste’s streamlined silhouettes to Marchesa’s fiercely feminine creations, Sonia’s aesthetic is an overall refreshingly original glimpse into an adept fashion devotee’s mind.
Name: Sonia Kumar
Position: Student Designer and Fashion Blogger
CollegeFashionista: How do you incorporate fashion into your daily life?
Sonia Kumar: All that’s ever made sense to me was fashion and that’s all I have ever wanted to do. I own a fashion blog called Je M’appelle Chanel, which is where I profess my undying love for fashion, style and punk rock. It’s nice to have an outlet where I combine my personal life and style.
CF: What has been your biggest challenges in designing for fashion and your biggest challenge in school?
SK: Fear is definitely the biggest challenge. In designing, life and in school. Being self-conscious about your work and the future is a very scary and challenging thing. You never know what’s going to happen so it’s best to leave the negative thoughts and the doubts at the door. Instead of letting fear scare me, I let it inspire me.
CF: Who are your favorite designers or design houses and why?
SK: My favorite designer of all time has to be Anna Sui. Her aesthetic is so her. Versatile, edgy and punk rock, yet still whimsical, feminine and cohesive all at once. If I could only wear Anna Sui for the rest of my life I would die happy. I also adore Marchesa, I think Georgina Chapman is a genius. Chanel is also an undying bond that will never be broken. Also, Marc Jacobs and Rachel Zoe, which is always so on-trend yet durable.
CF: Onto a fun question! Who is your dream client? How would you dress them and for what event?
SK: I’ve recently become obsessed with Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spiderman 2, Kill Your Darlings) so I’ve been toying with the idea of what it would be like to style him for the Oscars. There’s an interview with him talking about this Saint Laurent leather jacket he’s obsessed with, so I feel like a dark blood red Tom Ford suit with a skinny tie and possibly his leather jacket would be killer. I would also kill to style Rooney Mara for the next Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film. She loves to stick with a neutral palette, and clean timeless designers such as Givenchy and Calvin Klein, so I’d style her in a black lace Marchesa spring/summer 2014 gown. Something different, but not too far away from whom she is.
